Elves, Dwarfs, and Dragons

Oh My!
"I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls. And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in [their] pleasant palaces. It shall be an habitation of dragons, [and] a court for owls. The satyr shall cry to his fellow. In the night the dragon came, belching forth in rage his fiery poison, and filling the air with burning vapor. Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Can you chain up the unicorn with his band in a fence? Or will he chase you all over the valley? And the people saw great flashes of lightning and fiery dragons were seen flying in the air."

These passages are not from the latest fairy tale novel. They are from the bible, the Book of Mormon, the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, and the Teachings of Buddha!

For along time people have wondered what is the connection between the magickal folks, Wizards, and Witches? I will now explain that connection.

The magickal folks are our allies, helpers, and even teachers. An important form of magick is becoming allied with the magickal folk. The ancient Hebrews (who had a very advanced knowledge of magick) called this alliance cheber. Cheber is translated as magician in the KJV bible and means to be in the association, company, band, or shared society of the magickal folks. We Wiccans call this alliance gaining a familiar or familiar magick. The Historia Regum Britanniae, records that Merlin had a familiar spirit and that this spirit was a source of his magickal power. The Jewish prophet Jeremiah also had familiars, Jeremiah 20:10. Daniel's magickal powers came from his familiars (translated as "the spirits of the Holy Gods") in Daniel 4:18. In fact, your magickal effectiveness directly relates to the number and types of familiars you have. Therefore, you should want to gain as many familiars as you can! Yes, you can do magick without familiars. Familiar magick is only one form of many magicks.

Ever wonder how a mother can lift a car from off of her injured child when it is physically and scientifically impossible for her to do so? It's not her alone, but her and her familiars that are lifting that car off her injured child.

Children, as my 3 year old daughter tells me, know that the wind, rivers, dolls, rocks, puppets, and such like are very much alive. That these inanimate objects can be addresses and they will respond in kind. To understand the magickal folks, let us return to this child-like state. Wiccans are animist (like children) - all things considered living or non-living (those that appear to be non-living) have a spirit or soul. Elementals, familiars, and the magickal folks are synonymous. Elementals, nature spirits, fairies, dragons, whatever you call them, are real living beings and not just the stuff of fairy tales! They can be seen, touched, and communicated with.

The Native American equivalent to the magickal folks is the Totem (from the Algonquin meaning "family") or spirit guides.

Long ago people used to have common contact with the magickal folks. The Sea God Manann seeing the rise of the new Christian religions sought to protect the magickal folks from persecutions that were to come by creating a magickal wall of separation. What this wall is, is unknown. Scientist with the "Philadelphia Experiment" are only now beginning to explore this area. Wiccans however, have long known the key to opening a gateway between the worlds - the magick circle.

People often fall into the otherworld or where the magickal folks exist, that's what the stories of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland is all about.

Incidentally, the Apostle Paul wrote to the Galations (Celts) concerned that they were rejecting Christianity and returning to "the elements of the world," Galations 4:3;8-10. According to Christianity, the elements are interpreted as heathen deities and the first principles of science (being earth, air, fire, water, and the spirit). Our magickal folks have been a part of our religion for a very long time. Paul also correctly identifies the magickal folks as not being Gods in Galations 4:8. The magickal folks are more like our brothers, sisters or best friends.

The Elements appear in the Greek legends as the Titans that were imprisoned by Zeus and the Formorians defeated by the Danaans in Celtic Mythology. These defeats were figurative, not literal. The Elements are not slaves to anyone or imprisoned. They are not to be commanded but asked, politely. The Titans and Formorians represent earth, air, fire, and water. The Olympians (Greek) and Danaans (from Celtic myth) represent the element of spirit. The meaning of the battles is the elements support the spirit (element) of life and the elements themselves are filled with spirit. Another way of putting it, is the elements of earth, air, fire, and water can be divided into specific properties that can be scientifically analyzed. However, the spirit can't be separated because it exists in all things be they earth, air, fire or water. This is called animism!

The first place most people knowingly contact the magickal folk is when they cast the magick circle. When you cast a circle and call the elements to it; you are inviting many magickal folks (only a few of which are discussed). All of the magickal folk have the power of invisibility. So at first you may not see these magickal beings when you cast your circle. You may sense their presence or you may hear them walking around or moving. In some way they will make their presence known! The magickal folks don't want to frighten you, so they will slowly build their contact with you.

Now, let's talk about the known citizens of the magickal kingdoms. Yes, there are many magickal folks that are unknown to us.

KINGDOM OF THE EARTH FOLK:

Dwarfs, gnomes, rocks, mountains, trees, and satyrs are all Earth Folks.

The earth folk's lesson for us is to be responsible!

In April 1979 an actual dwarf's underground city was discovered at Aegol Barrow U.K. at the estates of Sir Rupert Grootes.

The diggers found a stone door with "Kingdom of the Dwarfs" written upon it in old Norse. After opening the door they found a four story underground city, small coats of armor, tapestries, hammers, metal working equipment, steel (predating the iron age by 500 years), a steam powered pile driver with a carbonized steel battering ram, miles of tunnels, and scrolls.

The Royal Academy of Archaeological Sciences fearing a loss of funding withdrew from the site because it was too controversial and invited outside experts to examine the site.

These experts translated some of the scrolls, they documented that Christianity committed genocide against the dwarfs. These scrolls also contain significant information for Wiccans.

For more information see, The Kingdom of the Dwarfs by Centaur Books Inc., 799 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10003.

Gnomes: a gnome can be called to guard your small children, but most of the time they just show up. This explains a child's so-called imaginary friend or why a child may run to you and say someone is in their room (of course you don't see anybody). I recommend that when your child has his/her "imaginary friend" don't say it is not real, or poke fun at the child. Let's permit our children to keep these magickal friendships.

You can call a gnome to guard your home. Have you ever wondered about the creaking and cracking noise you hear at night in the house? This is the gnome patrolling the house. We have explained this cracking and creaking noises as the result of cold weather. If it's the cold weather, why do the cracks and creaks happen in the warm summertime too. Sometimes the temperature is even colder during the day than at night, but there are no creaks during the day. Why do the cracks and creaks happen only at night? Your home Gnome guards the house at night, while you are asleep. Now and then it's a good idea to thank your house guardian.

Also people who talk to themselves are really talking to their gnome. Most people don't realize they are talking to their gnome because they have been socialized into not believing in gnomes. Ever wonder how an answer to a problem just pops into your mind? That's how gnomes talk to us. Western society discourages and fears the "unknown." We are pressured to repress such otherworldly contacts. For example, others may call someone that talks to themselves crazy.

Rocks and stones: They are almost immortal. In the Historia Regum Britanniae, Merlin speaks of Stonehenge having a connection with the secret religions and having magickal properties. Speaking of magick stones, Job 28:3 refers to "the stones of darkness" and Ezekial 28:16 to "stones of fire." The bible even says stones can make woman pregnant. That's why Pagan women sit on stones or crawl through stone openings to get pregnant.

To access stone magick our ancestors built and worshipped in the great stone circles like Stonehenge and Avenbury. It's important to note that a stone doesn't have to be expensive or from Stonehenge to be powerful. Any stone familiar has power! You can buy stones in a store or find them in a stream or on the ground. How do you tell if a stone wants to be your familiar? Hold the stone in the hand or against the body. If it feels good, the stone is your familiar. Having a pet rock is a good method of getting a stone familiar.

The color of the stone signifies its ability in spell work. Here's a poem to help you remember what the stones are for:

Red will get him\her in bed, Yellow makes your mind excello! White makes you dream all night. Green makes money seen; Blue to calm you, Black sends bad magick back. Crystals are power pistols.

Trees: see The Sacred Trees.

Satyrs: represent the reproductive function of nature, in other words, "lust." No where is being responsible more important than in sexual activities! Pan is their chief and he is seen always endlessly falling in love with this maiden or that nymph. Sometimes sex is scary, "the condom broke." Hence the word panic. Since the whole world is doing it, it's called a panorama. Two little words, "I'm pregnant" can cause all kinds of pandemonium. And weren't panties designed to tease Pan? When an aircraft is in trouble the pilot radios "Pan, Pan, Pan" and when they really in trouble he pilot radios the name of one of our sabats, "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday".

Another satyr is found in the Shakespearean play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. He's called Puck and goes about making people fall in love.

Many times men have asked, are there female satyrs? You bet, and I had an encounter with one, but I'm not talking.

Satyrs can be found were sex acts are occurring in nature. However, they are rarely seen because most people are too distracted to watch for them.

KINGDOM OF THE WATER FOLKS:

mermaids, mermen, nixes (fresh water merfolk), unicorns, rivers, seas, rain, and oceans are water elementals. They're also mortal. Once water is polluted they die. All the water folks have the power to shape shift, for example a mermaid can have legs one moment and a fish tail the next. Most of the time they are invisible.

The water nixie was the first magickal folk, I can remember contacting. When I was about 9 years old, my parents took a vacation to the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. On our travels we stopped at a nature site. It was a beautiful tall natural waterfall. I quite enjoyed the spray of the mist from the falls because it was really hot. Then I noticed one of the droplets in the mist was waving a hand at me. I looked closer and this droplet had a smiling face, small arms and legs that were almost invisible and a round body. Its color was blue brown that matched the color of the water in the waterfall giving it a good camouflage. Then as I looked around, I noticed there were thousands of nixies everywhere all smiling and waving at me. I remember calling my parents to look, but they criticized me for having an over active imagination.

The lesson waterfolk teach us is to be in touch with and in control of our emotions. In Grimm's fairy tale, The Nixie of the Mill-pond, it shows that the waterfolks are almost ruled entirely by their emotions. Logic and reason to them play only a small part of their life.

Roman writer Pliny, was the first to record mermaids. In 1403, a mermaid was found at Edam, Holland when a breach occurred in one of the dikes. She was unable to speak and lived for 15 years. In 1830, a mermaid was on display at London's Egyptian Hall. One of the most famous nixies is from the Arthur legend, "The Lady of the Lake." She gave Arthur the sword, Excalibur. In 1608, Henry Hudson the famous explorer reported and described a mermaid in the Arctic Ocean, west of Russia. Richard Whitbourn (British Officer, governor of St. Johns) in his Discourse and Discovery (1620) describes a mermaid and her injury, maybe even death at the hands of terrified sailors.

What do mermaids and mermen look like? Hans Christians Anderson's The Little Sea-maid describes them well.

To see mermaids and mermen, go to a very large body of salt water on a full moon. The body of water must be very large. For they will show themselves at a distance to assure their safety. Go to the edge of the water and call to the merpeople, asking them to show themselves. Then sit along the shore and stare into the full moon's reflection in the water. Soon you will see them!

To see nixies, go to a waterfall or bubbling brook where the water particles seem to hang in the air. Ask the nixies to show themselves, then sit and look at the water particles as they float by. Some particles will reveal themselves to be nixies.

History records that Alexander the Great rode a unicorn during his conquests and a unicorn's horn was found in the inventories of Queen Elizabeth I. The great Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner, in Historia Animalium (1551-87), described the unicorn. The Horned God also at times shape shifts into a unicorn.

KINGDOM OF THE AIR FOLKS:

Fairies, elves, the wind, pixies, tornados, and others are members of the air folks.

For centuries scholars have pondered the connection of British fairies with the Roman and Greek Gods. Shakespeare identifies Oberon as King of the Fairies and Titania as the Queen of the Fairies. Ovid in his Metamorphoses III,173 calls Diana by the name Titania. Chaucer calls Pluto "the king of Faerie" and "Pluto and his quene Prosperine and alle hir faerie..." King James I in his Daemonologie refers to the Goddess Diana but "amoung us called the Phairie." What's the connection? Many fairies are Gods and the religions of the Greeks and ancient Britons is the same, just different terminologies are used.

King James I in his Daemonologie identifies fairies as demons. Which explains why he translates fairies as devils in his version of the bible in Leviticus 17:7, Deuteronomy 32:17, and II Chronicles 11:15. I have encountered fairies, but I have never encountered demons! And all Pagans I have ever known say demons don't exist. Many of the new religions say we Wiccans get our magick powers from demons. This dogma contradicts the bible which says demons are "reserved in everlasting chains under darkness..." Jude 6 making demons (if they exist) powerless. I don't know if demons exist or if they are simply imprisoned without power. Either way demons are not players in magick.

There are many types of fairies. They are real beings and they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and are called by a multitude of names. This phenomenon is called fairy glamour. You see, fairies appear to us in the way that we think they should look! So, if we think of them as "Tinkerbell," then we'll see "Tinkerbell." Sometimes we may even be dealing with elves and not know it for Christ said, You have entertained angels and knew it not.

A description is given of a fairy in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

"O! then I see Queen Mab hath been with you. She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes in shape no bigger than an agate-stone on the forefinger of an alderman, Drawn with a team of little atomics. Athwart men's noses as they lie asleep: Her waggon-spokes made of long spinners' legs; The cover, of the wings grasshoppers; The traces, of the smallest spider's web; The collars, of the moonshine's watery beams; Her whip, of cricket's bone; the lash, of film; Her waggoner, a small grey-coated gnat, not half so big as a round little worm prick'd from the lazy finger of a maid; Her chariot is an empty hazel-nut, made by the joiner squirrel or old grub, time out o' mind the fairies coach-makers. And in this state she gallops night by night through lovers' brains, and then they dream of love; O'er courtiers' knees, that dream on court'sies straight: O'er lawyers' fingers, who straight dream on fees: O'er ladies' lips, who straight on kisses dream; Which oft the angry Mab with blisters plagues, because their breaths with sweetmeats tainted are. Sometime she gallops o'er a courtier's nose, and then dreams he of smelling out a suit; And sometimes comes she with a tithe-pig's tail, tickling a person's nose as a'lios asleep. Then dreams he of another benefice; Sometimes she driveth o'er a soldier's neck, and then dreams he of cutting foreign throats, of breaches ambuscades, Spanish blades, of healths five fathom deep; and then anon drums in his ear, at which he starts and wakes; And, being thus frighted, swears a prayer or two, and sleeps again. This is that very Mab that plats the manes of horses in the night; And bakes the elf-locks in foul sluttish hairs, which once untangled much misfortune bodes: This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs, that presses them and learns them first to bear, making them women of good carriage: This is she."

Of all the magickal folks, it is the fairy that interacts the most with humans. This is probably because humans move through the air as they do. Fairies quickly ally with humans.

They are night creatures who like to drink, dance, sing, and party. I know this, while we were celebrating a sabat at Dauh Castle in Germany, their fiddle playing and dancing kept our Priestess, Lady Azadeh, me, and everyone else awake all night long.

The lesson they teach us is the importance of enjoying life, for it is the gift of the Lady and Lord.

How do you contact fairies? Most of you already have. Have you ever walked through a forest or field and felt spider web on your face? But when you wipe your face nothing is there, and you still feel the web touching your face. This is the touch of a fairy. You may see lights or a glow or hear singing while walking in forests or lonely places. Especially at night. Ever walk in a forest and feel like something is following you? A fairy is or some other magick folk.

Fairy activities are particularly potent around fairy rings. Fairy rings are circles of mushrooms. CAUTION: Before you encroach upon a fairy ring, you must first gain the fairy's permission to enter. How do you know if you have permission to enter the ring? Well, first you must ask to enter the ring. If you feel a sense of being repelled from the ring then you should not enter it. If you feel drawn to the fairy ring after asking, then it's safe to enter the ring.

If you go to sleep in a fairy ring you will not only see fairies, but could be transported into the fairy realm.

Visits to the fairy realm can be a shocking experience if you're not prepared! History records many a medieval soldier went insane after returning from the realm. When you consider the lack of freedom given the medieval folks, then to be put into a society of total freedom (the fairy realm) would drive many a person to insanity.

Also, time passes slowly for fairies, but rapidly in this world. Remember the story of Rip Van Winkle? When you come back to this world, years may have passed and we have people disappearing all the time. They maybe living in the fairy realm. Even the Christian God's heaven has this time displacement for a day is as a thousand years.

Albert Einstein explains this lapse in time with his theory of relativity. During World War II the U.S. conducted the Philadelphia Experiment to camouflage warships at sea. Putting away all the Hollywood contributions, these facts from this classified experiment have come forth: the ship vanished, the ship went to another location not on earth, time was not measurable, other beings were present at this location, and most of the sailors went insane upon their return, just like the medieval solders. It would be very interesting to publish the religious and social beliefs of those sailors that didn't go insane. However, this information is still classified in violation of federal law which requires it to be declassified by now. To prepare for a journey into the fairy realm you could study the fairies in mythology and folklore.

Fairies aren't dangerous, just very free and very uninhibited. They have no social restrictions on sex. A fairy would satisfy their sexual desires as easily as your or I would eat an apple when hungry. When you're in the fairy realm you will be as free and uninhibited as any fairy! This could cause some problems with (Christian) guilt when you return from the fairy realm, maybe even insanity. Today with the freedom of this society most folks could visit the fairy realm and return unharmed.

The Historia Regum Britanniae reports that the daughter of the King of Demetia had intercourse with a fairy, became pregnant and gave birth to "Merlin the Magician."

Fairies have the power of invisibility and to shape shift into many different forms. They may disguise themselves as a dog, cat, just about anything. You can tell when an animal is a shape shifted fairy because it won't act as that animal should. For example, I attended a Pagan campout and the insects were making a great deal of noise. Normally, when you approach noisy insects in a forest they will become silent. Not the insects at this campout. You could walk right up to them, yell, beat on a drum, and they just kept right on going. These were fairies pretending to be insects!

So the next time you see a stray animal, treat it with respect and don't abuse it - for it could be a fairy.

How do you gain fairies as allies? You don't. They will contact you and provide you their services without asking. Sometimes this can cause problems. A fairy may do things that he or she thinks will help you but don't. To get rid of these fairies is easy since they are easily insulted. Just verbally thank them or tell them to leave.

In Grimm's fairy tale, The Elves it tells us that you must never verbally thank a fairy. Fairies think that humans are experts at "lip service" and saying thank you only proves that lip service to them. If verbally thanked, most fairies will pack their bags and leave on the spot. Remember, fairies are not evil - some are just mischievous. Some pesky fairies may need to be asked to leave (such as the ones that keep tying my daughter's hair in knots).

Fairies make formidable allies and you should try to gain them as such whenever possible. Thanking them in a nonverbal way seems to be the best means to gain them as allies. Fairies should be thanked, but with deeds rather than words. Libation offerings such as gifts of milk, honey, and bread should be given to them. Just put the offering on the ground and they will come to get it. Use caution when giving gifts other than milk, honey or bread, in particular clothing. In a medieval tract about Robin Good Fellow, this fairy was exceptionally offended when clothes were offered to him. But in Grimm's, The Elves the fairies were very happy when they were given clothes. So play it safe and stick with the milk!

There are seasonal fairies named winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Disney's Fantasia describes them well.

There are special fairies, called the Banshee that comfort the dying. The Banshee leads the departing soul back to Summerland, Avalon or heaven. The three maidens that transported the dying King Arthur on a boat, were Banshee.

The early Christians turned the Banshee into horrible skeletons. Actually, the Banshee are very attractive and caring. They are sent by the Lady or Lord to comfort the dying. The Banshee are not unpleasant at all and are in many ways like the Hospice today.

The new religions likely got their view of angels from the description of fairies. Their guardian angels may come from our guardian fairy; like the one who tested Sir Lancelot in the Adventure of the Cart. Ever think you see something out of the corner of your eye? You do! It’s your guardian fairy. The fairy shows themselves to you to let you know they are here protecting you.

There is another air being called the Will O' Wisp, a mysterious ancient energy being that is often mistaken for those glowing plasma UFO's. I met one when she floated across our runway in Lakenheath, UK. The military officials reported her as a UFO. In fact, most UFO sightings are just fairies!

KINGDOM OF THE DRAGONS:

Dragons, fire, lava, nuclear radiation, and other fire beings are all citizens of the Kingdom of Dragons. Dragons exist in all societies. Scientists, historians, and anthropologists have no explanation for this wide spread knowledge of dragons, but Carl Sagon has a reason for this phenomena. His reason, dragons are memories from the time of the dinosaurs. He calls it "mammalian memory" that we genetically inherited from our ancestors. I disagree. Dragons are real and they do exist today; that's why everybody knows about them.

Strabo in The Geography and Pliny in Natural History both attested to the factual existence of dragons. In 450 AD, The Historia Regum Britanniae, records that King Vortigern of the Britons discovered two dragons while building a tower. In 793 AD, The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle describes fire dragons near the Northumberlands of Britain. On 30 Nov. 1222, dragons were observed flying over London. Edward Topsell in 1608 reported that dragons had caused fires and poisoned wells in some cities located in Germany. In 1544 Sebastian Munster wrote Cosmographia Universalis, that described dragons and basilisks. The great Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner, in Historia Animalium (1551-87), described winged dragons.

Battles with dragons occur throughout history. The Norse God, Thor, had Jormungandr on a chain and was about to crush it with his hammer when the chain broke and the dragon escaped. Marduk killed Tiamat with an arrow. The Egyptian God, Ra, battles the dragon, Apep, each dawn for the salvation of the earth. Apollo killed Python. Saint George killed a dragon on 23 April at Dragons Hill, Berkshire, England. During his conquests, Alexander the Great fought many dragons. Old King Beowulf fought the Grendal. Even the Christians' God got into the act and fought against Leviathan, but was unable to kill it. The Christians' God promises that they would fight again in Isaiah 27:1 "In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that [is] in the sea."

In Grimm's, The Two Brothers, it shows that your familiars also can fight against the Dragons of your life. In The Two Brothers a rabbit familiar gave the dragon quite a difficult time! One would not think a rabbit could do much damage, but he did. So you should not think of any familiar as weak because of its appearance. You're familiar may appear harmless such as a rabbit, but your rabbit familiar may be the meanest thing in the neighborhood.

Battles with dragons may represent the things that need to be destroyed in your life. Smoking, drug-use, or any destructive behavior may be the dragon that you must slay.

However, keep in mind that not all dragons should be slain! For dragons are often guarding treasures, rubies, jewels, even sleeping on beds of gold coins. These treasures are knowledge and your dragon familiar can reveal much knowledge to you. For knowledge is power indeed.

Many tales speak of a fair maiden, princess, or old woman held captive by a dragon with many good knights questing to rescue her. This rescue is man's quest for the Goddess. For the maiden guarded by the dragon is the Goddess! In this case, the man's struggle against the dragon is to discover the Goddess. It is a great battle that wages within himself, and few men there be that slay this dragon and find the greatest treasure of all -- the Goddess.

Dragons are associated with fire. Fire causes light, illumination, heat, and destruction, therefore fire is the element of change. Nothing purifies like fire. The strongest metals are made from it and so are the strongest people. Many years ago, even Christians burned Witches because it was the only thing powerful enough to save their soul!

Fire in its destructive form, destroys the outdated and obsolete so new change can grow.

The dragons lesson for us is to stand up for the truth. A long time ago the Druids had a saying, "Truth against the world." The dragon reminds us to standup for the truth even if the whole world says you're wrong. Which reminds me of another old saying, "The truth may not make you any friends, but it sure does influence people."

You can see dragons in the heavy smoke of a fire.

KINGDOM OF THE SPIRITS:

is the abode of Goddess and God. Often called Avalon, by the Celts and could be considered something of a heaven for Pagans.

However, there is one special magickal creature that is in the Spirit Kingdom - the phoenix. The phoenix has gold and red feathers and a pheasant-like head. It is very rarely seen, because in all the world there is only one.

There is only one to remind us of the one great truth. The soul is immortal! When the phoenix dies it turns to ashes and later it rises from its own ashes to live again. You may kill or burn the body, but the soul will return to live again.

Some see the phoenix as prophecy. AntiWitches claim that Wicca was extinct in the sixth century.1 But rising from the ashes of the burning times, the Wicca are reborn.

All accounts of seeing the phoenix come from the middle east and they are from long ago. I don't know how to see it.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: You, the human are a magickal creature. The soul is learning, growing and gaining experience. When the body dies the soul leaves and inhabits another body.

All knowledge is learned and earned and it may take many lives to learn a single lesson. Because souls are at different levels of maturity, this explains why some people are mature and others immature -- the difference being the level of their spirit.

SUMMARY:

"If you talk to the animals, they will talk to you," Chief Dan George. "But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall teach thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee" Job 12:7-8. Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything, As You Like It, act II, scene I, by Shakespeare.

How do we learn more about magickal creatures? By reading the stories (fairy tales) told about them and going to where they can be seen.

Why should we learn more about magickal folks? To increase the effectiveness of our magick by making them our familiars or spirit allies.

How do we make them our allies? It's very simple, just ask them to be your friend. Magickal folks, be it unicorns or dragons that come to you in your dreams or visions are asking to be your familiar. Some familiars stay with a family through many generations; the Romans called theses familiars Penates. Familiars want to be your friend. However, most people don't use them and the spirit familiar leaves to find someone else they can help. The key is to keep your familiar as an ally. To do that, you need to do something with them. Send a fairy to heal a friend. Send a dragon to protect someone in danger. Ask a gnome to watch over your home or protect your child. Ask a mermaid to find out information for you.

Lastly, when you cast your magick circle invite them to it. For if you don't keep in touch with them, they will leave. Consider this, if you made a friend and that person never called you or talked to you; didn't invite you to their parties. What kind of friend would they be? They're no kind of friend at all. Magickal folks are the same way. As above so below!

Keep in touch with your dreams, your familiars, for they want to work with you throughout your magickal life. Keep in touch with that wolf or fairy. Don't let them leave. They are your best friends.
