"What?" I was horrified. I got down to try and see him but I was looking in the wrong place. I was searching the ground far from the top where I was.
"Right here!" Nick was practically right beside me. There had been a branch sticking out from the wall of the falls and Nick was hanging from it.
I slowly pulled him in and we both fell back on to safe sold ground, panting and shivering. Snow clung to my jeans and to Nick because he was wet. After I had caught my breath I checked on my friend. He was all right, only cold.
"Come on, let's get you back to the shelter." I said as I helped him up and we started back.
We were about 9 miles away from camp and it took us quite a bit of time to get back to the shelter. It was already dark by the time we sat down around the fire and tried to get warm.
"Everyone alright?" I asked looking around.
Everyone said yeah. That's when I noticed the mile long smile on Nick's face.
"What's up with you? Three of us almost die and you're smiling?" AJ noticed too.
"It's not that." Nick said in the way he always did when he was being mysterious. "I found the bus." He said.
"What?" Kevin looked at him.
"Where?" Howie asked.
"When I was hanging by the tree waiting for Brian." Nick rolled his eyes at me, "I noticed something in the water. It was the bus. It's upside down in the deepest part of the stream. The whole things submersed. Some of our stuff is still floating around."
"Good." Kevin nodded, "When we're all okay and can travel we'll go back and get a few things but until then Howie stays off his foot, except for the occasional call of nature and Nick, if you go off again I will hunt you down and kill you." Kevin said to Nick.
"In other words, you better stay in Kevin's sight." AJ translated it into more civilized terms.
Nick sighed, then said, "Ya know, I'm still hungry."
Kevin and AJ looked at each other at the same time; "We never did get food." Kevin shook his head.
"That's okay." I said and got up and went outside. I went over to our storage place and dug the snow away from it. Then I grabbed three frozen fish and went back inside.
"Forgot about those…" AJ said as I sat down again.
"So did I but at least now we have food." I said.
We cooked the fish and ate. Nick painfully forced the fish down. We had run out of berries and they were beginning to become harder and harder to find. And Nick's jaw was still broken.
That night I fell into a deep sleep. I dreamed all night. Of losing Nick to hypothermia, losing AJ and Kevin from the waterfall and Howie from falling into a bottomless pit. I was alone…all alone.
"Nee-yaa!" I sat up and yelped. I was panting and I was covered in sweat. Everyone was sleeping.
"Frick?" Nick slowly sat up, rubbing his eyes, "What's wrong?" He asked, worriedly, still half asleep.
"Nothing, sorry I woke you, go back to sleep." I said trying to catch my breath.
"You sure?" he asked, though he laid back down.
"Yeah, I'm sure…sure…" I looked around. The fire was dying so I threw another piece of wood onto it.
Even though I had been sweating I was chilled. Why did I have to dream? I slowly got up and crawled over to Howie. I glanced at the watch. 4:30 in the morning. Close enough. There was no way I was going to back sleep after that.
I sat watching the fire and listening to the silence, except for everyone sleeping. Howie was snoring softly. Kevin kept moving around. AJ's foot occasionally slipped from leaning on the wall of the mountain and he'd move it back. Nick was talking in his sleep like he sometimes did; I couldn't make out what he was saying but that's usually what happened. And even Cloud was snoring!
Finally I started to feel tired again and in my tiredness I forgot all about the dream and I slowly fell back asleep.
I opened my eyes and yawned. Then got a mouthful of wolf spit. "Uh!" I moved back as Cloud licked my mouth, including inside my mouth.
"Cloud!" Nick's voice hissed. Cloud stopped and put his tail between his legs and then sat down, looking at wherever Nick was.
"Dumb dog." I sleepily complained then closed my eyes to try and sleep.
Suddenly a cold breeze startled me and I sat up. AJ had just came in from outside. He had two more fish and had walked passed me.
"Morning." Howie said when he saw me awake. Or kinda awake.
I mumbled something under my breath.
"Whoa…someone woke up on the wrong side of the blanket, what's your problem?" Nick looked at me.
I just glared at him and he looked at me like I was just going to kill him.
"Bad night?" He asked.
I nodded as I turned back to the fire. I didn't want to talk about it and I could tell Nick didn't want to hear about it right then.
We sat in silence until the fish were done. AJ passed this fish out and I slowly ate. It did make me feel better and now it was easier to talk with out snapping at anyone.
"We need to find more food." AJ said, "The fish supply is getting low and we need to stalk up again."
"But it's getting too cold to go outside." Nick complained.
"You're right." Kevin sighed.
"AJ and me have been working on the boots." Howie said, "We've gotten one pair done but we need more rabbits." Howie sighed, followed by the rest of us.
I looked at my runners. They were really worn out. The laces were gone and they were beginning to come apart. I had taken them off to sleep and my feet felt cold without them.
"Count me out." Nick said, "I am not going rabbit hunting." He said, hugging his knees.
"You might have to learn ya know." Kevin said sternly, "If we are trapped out here much longer we might have to look for bigger game like deer." Kevin said.
Nick looked at him then looked down at the fire.
"Nick and I'll go fishing this afternoon. We can at least swim." I joked. Kevin could have killed me for that and the look on AJ's face wasn't that much better.
That afternoon Nick and I went fishing. No swimming was needed this time and we brought 3 fish back to camp. There were hardly anymore left in that part of the water and I didn't want to think of having to walk further in the cold weather to find a better spot. It seemed that everything was going wrong at the same time. We still had the little rabbit meat the three had carved off the rabbits but to feed five guys and one wolf pup that wasn't much.
But at least one thing was good. While the two of us had been freezing out butts off Kevin had gone out and walked around, finding a new place to gather berries and he had taken Cloud out and Cloud had caught another rabbit.
The only problem with the berry bushes were that they were two hours away from the shelter. And if the weather got any colder, which it probably would with our luck it would become pretty dangerous.
But Kevin had gathered enough for a few days if we were careful. That afternoon Howie and AJ sat outside in the cold skinning the rabbit. They had a fire so they weren't that cold. While they did this Nick slept as Kevin and I talked.
"We have to find more food sources." He said quietly.
"I know. But we've never been out here. How are we going to be able to find things when we don't know where they are, even if there is more food around it'll be a few miles away from the shelter." I said.
"You think some of the food would have survived the crash? You know, might still be in the bus?" He asked.
I shrugged, "Might be. But I'm not going to go down there to get it. Unless I have to, and that means if Nick's the only other one who can do it. I'm still dreaming about drowning and it completely freaked me out." I shook my head.
"Yeah, I've been dreaming too." He sighed, looking into the fire. "But with the five of us, plus Cloud we need to gather as much food as we can. And we need to some how obtain warmer material." He said.
"But how besides killing rabbits and things?" I asked, "We don't know how to kill a deer!" I said.
He shrugged and seemed to think, "Well, there's really one way to learn." He sighed and shook his head at the thought.
"What do you mean?" I asked, "Kill one? Just go out, shoot one with an arrow, drag it back here and skin it?" I asked unbelieving.
"Well…yeah. But imagine how much food one deer could give us, enough for about a week!" Kevin said. He was right but I didn't like the idea of killing a deer. But I guess we had to do what we needed to survive.
"How would we go about killing one? We'd need bigger arrows." I said.
"You're right. But maybe not arrows. Not out of wood anyway." He said.
"What?" I asked.
"While I was walking around I spotted this rock. It looked familiar and I remembered something I had heard about. It's a chipping rock and the edges are really sharp. If we could chip pieces from it we could use the good ones to use for arrows."
"It's from the story Nick told us." I remembered, "That kid had to do the same thing. But still, how are we going to chip pieces off of this rock?" I asked.
"Use another rock I guess." He shrugged, "We gotta try anything that could be a possibility."
"Yeah I know." I nodded. "Alright, tomorrow you and I'll go out and try to chip this rock. Then we'll bring back the pieces and try to do whatever we need to do with them." I said.
He agreed.
Howie and AJ came in then. Their hands were covered with blood and they were shivering from the cold. I got up and helped Howie in and over to a spot for him to sit near the fire.
"We're done for now." AJ shivered rubbing his hands together, "The rabbit was small so there was hardly enough meat." He said.
"Where'd you put the meat?" Kevin asked.
"The storage place." Howie said.
"Storage…yeah..." I nodded, "We need to store a lot of food. Where'd you say this place was with the berries?" I asked Kevin.
"Just follow the path you and Nick took to the first one and then you'll see my tracks. Take Cloud with you. And try the shoes out while you're at it." He said.
I looked at the rabbit-fur shoes. Then went over and put them on.
"Here." Kevin dumped out the bucket of berries he had collected this morning, "Fill this as full as you can." He said, handing it to me.
"Thanks." I took it.
"Here, you'll need this." AJ said, handing me my old T-shirt.
"Thanks." I took it and slipped it on, "I knew I'd get it back sometime." I smiled then called Cloud quietly. The pup stuck his head up from under the blanket he was sharing with Nick and came over to me, "See you guys later." I said as I shut the door.
"Hey boy, why don't you go catch us another rabbit?" I said to the dog as we walked down the old worn path.
He barked happily and followed me down through the snow. There was no wind but the cold air was enough. By the time we reached the old berry patch I was shivering uncontrollably.
"Let's hurry up." I said down to the wolf, who was also shaking. We began to pick up the pace as we found Kevin's tracks and followed them for about another hour. I could hardly feel my fingers as I picked the berries from the bushes.
My fingernails were totally white and my fingers were beginning to catch up. But my feet were warm. They were actually pretty sweaty. "Let's not get attacked by wolves this time either." I whispered to myself as I thought I heard a growl. I turned around. I had. Cloud was standing stock still looking into a bush.
"Oh great, this is all we need." I rolled my eyes. I could hardly breathe as I watched the creature emerge from the bush.
Oh my God! I looked at the creature. The big black creature, with big sharp teeth and lots of whiskers. It came over to me baring its big sharp teeth. I couldn't move, I was frozen in terror as it stuck out its big pink, wet, slimy tongue and drew nearer. Cloud continued to growl and I closed my eyes waiting for it to take my head off with is huge mouth. I could smell it's foul breath then suddenly I felt it.
