"B-ROK." I was shaken.
"Hmm." I moaned and rolled over. It was so cold, and wet.
"Brian, common." Kevin again shook me, this time with more strength.
"Alright! Alright! Ya wanna take my head off or something?" I sat up and looked around. It was daylight, but the light was dim. It was still raining. And Nick was still in front of me.
"Oh God…" I started when I looked at him, "Is he still alive?" I whispered.
Nick's face was white! Around his eyes was dark…it was…like looking at the dead…
"He's still alive." Kevin replied, "But not for long if we don't get help. Howie came up with an idea last night but you were fast asleep."
"What idea?" I asked as I very carefully crawled passed Nick and out of the shelter where Kevin stood. I stretched and my back cracked which really hurt. I winced and looked around again.
The sky was clouded, they weren't really dark clouds but it was easy to see that the rain wasn't going to stop for a while.
Howie and AJ were by a fire, AJ was feeding it wood to keep it going. In the dark of the last night I hadn't really had a good look at anyone. AJ's face was covered with dry blood, clearly from a deep gash on his forehead.
Howie was limping and his pants and shirt were ripped at the arms and around his knees. I looked my cousin up and down. He had a scratch starting by his left eye; it traveled down to his chin. He held his right arm closer to his side than usual.
"Kevvy, you're arm okay?" I asked.
He nodded, "Yeah, just sore." He replied shortly.
Just sore? I bet. I thought but dropped the subject.
"So what's this idea anyway?" I asked as Kevin and I joined the other two.
"We need to get that first aid kit. It's got everything we need in it." Howie said.
"Tell me something I don't know." I said, trying to warm up my hands by the fire. We were all really pale from the cold.
"Well, someone needs to dive down into the water and get it." AJ said.
"And it can only be you or me." Howie sighed.
I looked at him; my question must have showed on my face.
"AJ got hit in the head and he might lose conscience. And Kevin's arm is broken." Howie said, shoving more wood on to the fire. "Besides, someone's gotta stay here with Nicky."
"I'll do it." I nodded.
"I was thinking I would." Howie said.
"You got your ankle to worry about D. I'll do it. I'm fine." I said.
"Brian, look-"
"No." I cut Howie off, "I'll do it."
"Alright." He gave up. "Kevin and I'll go with you if you need any help. The water's pretty cold."
"I bet." I sighed, "When we gonna do this?" I glanced back at the body in the shelter.
"As soon as possible would be the best." Kevin said.
"Now then. Common." I started to walk.
"Hold up." Howie said, then limped over to a bunched of rags lying on the ground in a pile.
"What're those?" I asked as he picked them up.
"The best rope we could make." Howie said, throwing the 'rope' over his shoulder, "AJ and I cut a blanket into strips and tied them together this morning."
"Alright." I said as the three of us walked to the edge and looked down. It was a lot further down than it had been in the dark. I looked at the path the bus had taken. Yep. That would have killed Nick if we hadn't have moved him when we did. I thought to myself.
I got down on my knees and climbed down to a small ledge like part of the ground. I helped Howie down then we helped Kevin down.
From there we carefully slipped and fell to the bottom, which took us about an hour, or at least that's what if felt like.
As I climbed down the last part above the stream I starred at the water instead of where I was walking and I slipped and fell right on my ass. Of course my little adventure wasn't over with that. I slid forward toward the rushing water.
"Ahh!" I yelled as I passed Kevin and Howie who had been in front of me.
"Brian! Now is no time to be playin' around!" Kevin yelled.
"I'm not playing!" I yelled over my shoulder as I slid right off the edge and with a splash landed in the freezing water.
"Ah!" I coughed as I surfaced. "Oh my God! This is cold! This is cold!" I yelled at the top of my lungs.
Suddenly I was pulled under as if something had grabbed my leg. When I surfaced I was back behind the over turned bus instead of in front of it.
"Brian!" Kevin yelled, "The current! Get your ass back on ground!"
I started to swim and finally after giving it everything I had I finally reached the shore. I fell onto my back. I was so tired. I puffed and panted as Kevin and Howie rushed over to me.
"You alright?" Kevin asked.
"Yeah." I sniffed, "I'm fine." My nose was cold, my body was sore, but I forced myself up.
We walked back over to where I had landed into the water.
"You gotta be careful. The current is strong. It'll pull you under." Howie said as he handed me the rope. "Tie this around your waist."
I tied it and made sure the knot was tight. Then took off my shoes and shirt.
"What are you doing?" Kevin asked.
"They'll weigh me down." I said.
He nodded.
"Where is it?" I asked.
"It was right under the passenger seat up at the front, hopefully it got caught or something."
"Hopefully." I replied dryly.
"If something happens tug on the rope." Kevin said.
"Will do." I sighed, then looked at the rushing water. After cringing for a few seconds I finally dived it. It was like millions of knives stabbing me all at once. If you've ever stuck you're foot into the snow and left it there until it starts to burn you'll know what I'm talking about, only it was my whole body.
Mud was everywhere and I couldn't see. I surfaced again, this time right beside the upturned vehicle. I gulped for air then held it and ducked under. My feet and fingers were already numb. I searched around for an opening and found a big space where the back door used to be. I swam in. It had been dark under just the water, but now that I was in the bus it was pitch black.
I felt around but couldn't find anything. Needing to breathe, I started to the surface.
"Fine it?" Howie yelled as I gasped for air.
"No!" I yelled then dived back under. Again inside I searched for the seats. I couldn't find them! I stopped swimming and started to picture the bus inside my head. Only everything upside down. It was huge! I pictured where everyone used to sit, Kevin and Howie always taking the seats behind the driver's seat, AJ, Nick and I always in the back playing video games.
Nick. I stopped thinking. And opened my eyes again and moved forward. Finally I found the seats. I was hoping it was the passenger's seat. I felt around under the seat, which was now at the top. Nothing. I moved to the next seat. My hand closed around a handle. I pulled it out, just as I heard a grinding noise and suddenly the bus started to rock.
I'm gonna die. I thought as I felt the vehicle pull loose from the suction of the mud--the only thing keeping it at the bottom of the stream. I was knocked into the side of the chair, and then my head hit the roof. I quickly took hold of the rope and tried to pull myself toward the door. The rope was pulled tight.
They're probably pulling on the other end. I thought. But I couldn't wait, I needed to breathe. Common Brian. Do it for Nick. You gotta save him! I yelled at myself but nothing seemed to be working.
I looked around. Light. I could see light shimmering above me. I'm gonna die in an underwater chamber… My head went all fuzzy. I was never going to see my friends or family, I was never going to feel the nice warm sun again. I was going to die in a cold dark tomb stuck under the water. It was so cold…so…cold…
