The next morning I awoke first. Mostly because I had been dreaming of Nick coming after me in my sleep. He was dead and wanted to kill me because I hadn't saved him. But when I awoke Nick hadn't moved. Shadow was still huddling right next to him and Cloud was doing as much as he could to keep Nick warm too.
Kevin woke a while after that and we continued to carry Nick back to camp. I could tell Kevin was in pain, he was using both of his arms. Finally, after he couldn't take it anymore I carried Nick back to camp. His body was limp and it made me sick.
Kevin quickly opened the door when we got back to the shelter. I ducked in and moved out of Kevin's way. Shadow and Cloud both came in before he shut the door.
"Oh my God…you…he…" AJ didn't know what to say as he took of his sunglasses and stared at the body in my arms.
"He's still alive Bone." Kevin said as he sat down by the fire. I moved over to the fire too and carefully laid Nick on the floor. I went over and grabbed the blankets that were sitting where he had slept. I also grabbed my blankets. I stripped down to my boxers, which simply meant I took off my pants and I laid down right beside my frozen chum. I wrapped the blankets around us to keep in the body heat. Howie and Kevin offered their blankets as well and piled them up.
Nick's body was cold and I started shivering a little. AJ had gone to get more firewood and Kevin had gone to get something to eat.
Shadow came over and stood in front of us, between us and the fire. She sniffed at my face, then sniffed at Nick's. Then licked his face and his right ear.
"That's creepy. His eyes are open…" Howie stared at him.
I nodded in agreement, "They're frozen that way, hopefully when the ice melts we'll be able to close them." I hugged Nick closer. I had my right arm around his chest and my left arm was under his head. When Shadow had laid down and huddled close to Nick, trying to help me keep him warm, I moved so that I was lying my head down. I rested my head on the side of Nick's, so my ear was actually touching his. I had to warm as much of him as possible.
Being this close to him and having it being so quiet in the shelter I could hear his breathing. He was struggling to do it and seemed to make a pitiful noise every few minutes as if he were in pain every time he breathed.
"Try opening his mouth." Howie suggested, probably being able to hear him too.
I moved and brought my right hand up and separated Nick's pale lips. Immediately he began to breathe using his mouth. I could feel the warm air on my hand, then I moved back and lay still, staring into the fire.
Kevin came in minutes later and started to get the food ready. He talked to Howie at the same time about where we had found Nick.
By the time the food was ready AJ had returned with more wood. We kept the fire going and even blocked off the other shelter so we had more heat in the one we were in. I was actually getting pretty warm. The ice had melted from Nick's eyes but still they remained open. I had been thinking about it and I decided not to close his eyes. A small peace of ice, still melting could be stuck and it could cut Nick's eye.
I could feel myself starting to fall asleep. Kevin shook my arm. I looked up at him, "You hungry?" He asked.
I sighed and seemed to think if I was hungry. I hadn't eaten at all that morning. "Sure." I said quietly.
"Here." Kevin handed me a piece of meat. I ate it and finally had a taste of deer meat.
"Yuck!" I spat. It was bitter and it tasted like dry chicken. I normally liked chicken but I just wasn't in the mood. "Now I know what it tastes like." I made a face.
Everyone laughed at me as I settled down again.
"It's the only thing we have Bri." AJ shook his head, eating what he had.
I made a face then looked into the fire. It was silent for a long while, while everyone ate. When they were done Kevin talked about trying to hunt another deer when the first deer's fur was made into a coat. Speaking of that AJ got up when Kevin was done and went outside. He was gone for a few minutes then came back in with the deer skin.
Together he and Howie looked at it, trying to figure out how to exactly make it. They talked quietly and the murmur of their voices put me to sleep.
When I awoke Howie and AJ were already at work. The three of them were talking quietly still. Kevin was saying something about it snowing. I sighed and sat up, stretching.
"Hey B." AJ said, looking up from his work.
I yawned and covered Nick back up. Shadow came over and lay beside him. "How's it coming?" I asked, getting up and moving closer to them.
"Pretty good. We're trying to make it so it'll fit everyone." Howie said, also deep in his work.
I nodded, agreeing with the idea. Suddenly Shadow and Cloud started whining at the same time. Howie and AJ stopped, and the four of us turned to look over at them.
"They're worried." Howie said, amused.
"I really hope there's nothing to worry about…" I sighed.
I noticed Kevin looking at Howie and AJ; they were looking around at each other as well. Then they all glanced at me.
I sighed, seeing this, "Okay, what is it this time?" I asked, figuring something was wrong. Something was always wrong.
"Brian, don't you remember anything about TV?" AJ asked, half jokingly. "I mean…you used to watch it all the time…"
"No jokes AJ, just tell me." I said, getting sick of everything.
"I remembered watching something about the Ice Man a few years ago. And other things too but when body temperature goes so low…things happen…" AJ started but couldn't finished.
"What he's trying to say is that there could be something seriously wrong with Nick." Kevin said, "You know, brain damage or something. We don't know anything yet so don't over react!"
It surprised me, I had never thought about it before up until now. And they were right, something could be wrong. "Over react? Over react? What am I supposed to do other than over react?" My voice cracked, I couldn't tell what it was from though.
"Calm down, we can think of something." Kevin said, getting a little annoyed, though I knew inside he was upset too.
I felt sick. I felt like crying, like kicking and screaming. I felt like screaming. Everything was going wrong again! I felt bitter. "What time is it?" I asked, glaring at the red and orange flame of the fire.
"About 6:30pm." Howie looked at the watch, "Why?" He asked.
"I'm going back to bed." I hissed and went back to my spot beside Nick, Shadow and Cloud. Slowly I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
That night I dreamed. It was a really weird dream but it gave me a great idea.
"A bath tub?" AJ looked at me funny the next morning, "Brian, where the hell are we going to get a bath tub out in the middle of no where?" He asked, putting more wood onto the fire.
"We'll make one." I said, I had told the others about my dream. They didn't seem to understand.
"We know you smell B-ROK but you could just go jump in the stream." Howie joked.
"It's not for me!" I insisted, "It's for Nick. I mean if we made one and filled it with hot water we could warm him up faster." I said.
"Where would we put it?" Kevin looked around; "With the four of us and the two animals we don't have that much room." He said.
"Four? Four of us?" I looked at him; "There's five of us." I hissed.
"That's what I meant." Kevin acted as if I was going to bite his head off. "But you have a point." He nodded. "About the tub…"
"Alright…" AJ sighed, "What are we going to make it out of? It's not as if we have many choices here." He sighed.
"A tree or something, We could cut one down or if we find one." I said, I had already planned everything out. We'd get a tree then carve the tub part of it with sharp rocks. It was the only things we had but it could work.
Finally after a few hours of talking about it and trying to make them see what I was seeing AJ and I set out to find a tree. I was hoping so much we'd find one. Howie had finished the deer skin coat, AJ was wearing it. I had the rabbit shoes on.
"ROK, what about this one?" AJ asked. I joined AJ where he stood, standing beside a large fallen tree.
"No. It's all rotted on this whole side." I put my hand on the tree and leaned on it then climbed over a pile of deep snow leaning against the tree. It was getting hopeless and I was getting hopeless too.
AJ must have sensed something wrong with me because he stopped and suggested we take a short break. We both sat in silence for a few minutes finally AJ broke the silence.
"What's wrong B?" He asked.
I laughed shortly, what was wrong? Everything was wrong. We were all going to die out in the middle of nowhere and nobody was ever going to find us! We were going to suffer until the end. But I didn't say anything to AJ.
"Nick's going to be okay Brian, you gotta believe that." AJ's voice woke me from my thoughts.
I shook my head, "I try AJ but it's getting harder and harder after things happen!" I said, "Let's go, we got a tree to find." I got up and started walking away. I had to keep moving, keep my mind busy thinking of other things besides Nick. I hated picturing him frozen with his eyes still open. It gave me the creeps and I shuttered every time.
We spent hours upon hours of walking. It had grown dark and yet we still continued to walk. I could tell AJ was getting tired. I was tired too but I had to keep moving. Being tired was better than thinking and at that moment I was too tired to think. I concentrated on my breathing and the sound of the snow crunching under my feet.
I was cold too. My nose was practically frozen and I could no longer feel my fingers. My feet were warm. We had been smart enough to use the new clothes AJ and Howie had made.
Finally, we stopped and set up camp. We slowly and tiredly built a very small Quincy, then crawled into it and slept. I was so tired I didn't dream at all and I got a pretty good sleep.
