Beauty
Ok, so rats aren't the most widely accepted pet.
Ever wonder if there is something you can do to keep them from being
so commonly misunderstood? Well, in our society, usually if something looks good, it is accepted.
So lets give our rats makeovers!!! (Ummmm... wait -- I think I would choose the blue eyeliner
instead of the black) If we can show our visitors that
rats are charming animals, then they will more than likely become
a fellow rat lover like us!! Here we go:
Bathing
Rats themselves rarely need bathing unless
they participate in shows. Otherwise, only if s(he) is
smelly, greasy, or dirty. Mild dishsoap (for greasy males)
or mild baby shampoo or kitten shampoo may be used. Fill the sink
with no more than an inch of warm (NOT HOT!!!) water. Let the little
rat get used to the water, and then scoop it up to wet the fur.
Once wet, gently apply and lather a small amount of the shampoo.
Wet fur until all soap is out. Speak soothingly to calm it.
DO NOT let him(her) get water up the nose!!.
Lots of people give their rats baths. Myself, I have never felt
the need. I have heard plenty of horror stories of the scratches left
behind on the humans arms because the poor little rattie was so scared.
HINT: Do not run the water with the rat in the room, perhaps the sound scares them to??
Also, be extremely careful because I'm sure it won't take much for them to drown.
Nail Clipping
If the animals' little nails bother you, then you may clip them, but be careful.
Have someone hold the rat firmly (without hurting it). Using
small fingernail clippers (those made for babies will work great!)
clip only the white part of the nail, being very careful not to cut the vein
running through the middle. It is visible, just look for it.
In the case that you do cut the vein (don't worry, accidents happen) use styptic powder
to stop the bleeding.
