Your Rat's Nutritional Needs

Please Feed Me

What Should I Feed My Rat?
Lab blocks or rat and mouse pellets are completely nutritionally formulated for your rat's needs. Seeds are good, but not stable enough on their own. Rats will usually pick through the seeds only eating those they like best. This may leave gaps in the nutrition levels they are getting and cause health problems. You could possibly mix the two together to make the meal more enjoyable for your pet. Just give a small amount of seeds mixed with rat pellets.
Your rat also needs fresh foods. (These provide lots of vitamins and minerals).

Do Feed:
grapes
strawberries
apples
broccoli
cauliflower
garbanzo beans
popcorn
white rice
pasta
peas
tomatoes

What Treats Will My Rat Enjoy?
Rats love table scraps. As tempting as it may be, you have to keep this limited. There scraps are usually high in fat. Chicken bones are ok. They will chew the bone but are unable to choke on it. Fruits, vegetables, cooked spaghetti, and rice crispies are great treats that you may already have around your house. They also enjoy honey sticks and yogurt drops that you can look for at a pet store.

What Should Not Be Fed To Rats?
Rats should not be given lots of food high in protein or fats. (This includes dry or wet cat and dog food). Caffeine is a no-no. Processed sugar may be to hard to digest.

Do Not Feed:
chocolate
licorice
raw beans
carbonated drinks
raw sweet potatoe
raw red cabbage
brussel sprouts
raw artichokes
raw tofu
green bananas
green potatoe skin and eyes
spinach
