The Hudson Family

Gideon Green was issued two land grants in Oct 1782. Situated on Richardsons Creek, the two tracts of land were surveyed on 15 Jun 1779 with the help of Benjamin Thomas. Just the day before, a Jacob Thomas had a land grant suveyed likely less than a mile down the creek. Chainers were Iquiam Hudson and Thomas Gilbert. The description of this transaction is as follows:

Grant #4451, Anson NC, to Jacob Thomas. Ent 20 Apr 1779, Sur 14 Jun 1779, Iss 14 Oct 1783. The Entry Officer's Warrant for survey mentioned the intended grant would adjoin Hudson's survey and include his improvements. The actual surveys often vary from the described warrant. As for Jacob's grant, the later survey did not mention that the land adjoined Hudson land. It only indicated a survey for 100 acres south of the Rocky River and situated on the southeast side of Richardson's Creek. But, note that the chain bearers were Iquam (Joackim) Hudson and Thomas Gilbert.

Who was Iquaim Hudson, and could information on his life yhave any bearing on the identity of this Jacob Thomas? Is this Jacob related to us?

I believe Iquaim Hudson was actually Joackim Hudson who received land on Richardsons Creek during this time period. Here are a few of his early land records:

Grant # 4434, Anson NC, to Joackim Hutson. Ent__, Sur 9 Jun 1779, Iss 14 Oct 1780. In the warrant for survey, the name of Joacim Hudson was written over another name that is unreadable. The survey descibes the land as 100 acres "lying on the fork of Bear Creek Between Marey Pools & Thomas Gilberts including his improvement". The actual survey is for 100 acres on the south side of Rocky River on the north west side of Richardson's Creek adjoining Hudson land. The chainbearers were Thomas Gilbert and Joc. Hudson.

Grant # 4428, Anson NC, to Joacim Hudson. Ent __, Sur 10 Jun 1779, Iss 14 Oct 1783. This grant is for 100 acres situated on Bare branch on the south side of Rocky River and the north side of Richardson Creek. Chain bearers were Jocm. Hudson and Jeese Gilbert Burleson. Gilbert was stricken through. Apparently the records for Grant # 4428 and 4434 have been mixed up.

Grant # 5207, Anson NC, to Joakim Hutson. Ent 19 Jan 1796, Sur 7 Aug 1796, Iss 10 Jul 1797. This grant was for 50 acres on both sides of Richardson's Creek and adjoined his own lands and that of Josiah Wright. Chainbearers were Isaac Hill and William Hutson.

Grant # 5370, Anson NC, to Joacim Hudson. Ent 2 Jun 1797, Sur 20 Dec 1798, Iss 7 Jun 1799. For 150 acres of land situated on the north side of Richardsons Creek, adjoining his own land and that of Wright.

Note that Jocakim did not receive any land grants south of Richardson's Creek. However, the first known deeded land transaction for Joackim ocurred prior to Jacob's grant and was situated on both sides of Richardson's Creek. The following are related land deeds involving Joackim Hudson:

Note that "Hall" Hudson witnessed an early conveyance by Joackim. Also, the use of "Green's Branch" in defining his land. Knowing that William is the son of Joackim, let's take a look at some of his land records.

Deed (S-50, Anson NC) 6 Oct 1814. William Hudson to Spear Moore of Montgomery County NC. Being two tracts: Tract 1. being 59 acres on the south side of Richardson's Creek, Joackim Hudson's old line, and my 100 acre tract. Tract 2: Beginning on Jacob Thomas's corner on the bank of Richardson's Creek, this tract is for 100 acres. Witnesses were William Crittendon and Arminger Lilly.

Deed (S-446, Anson NC) 15 May 1819. William Hudson to Asa Baucom. Being 100 cares on the north side of Richardson's Creek. 100 acres of land running up Gum branch from its mouth, then to Hudson's line, then to Curlee land, adjoining Green's branch near Hudson line, then down the branch back to the beginning. Witnesses were William Baucom and John Hudson.

We should be able to locate this land. Note that William Hudson sold land adjoining Jacob Thomas's line? Was this the old Jacob that received land at the same time as Gideon Green and Joackim Hudson? Or was this the younger son of Benjamin Thomas. Interestingly, a descendant of Jacob(son of Benjamin) that lives on the the old land pointed across the way to where "Hudson's Branch" is.
