OTHER CHILDREN OF JOHN THOMAS

FRANCIS THOMAS

Francis Thomas was born on 19 Feb 1781 in Richmond County N.C. After his birth, he and his family lived in Guilford Co. N.C. until returning to the Piney Grove community. On 10 Dec 1803, when Francis came of age, he purchased from his father, 199 acres in Marlborough Co., S.C. The land was situated northeast of the Pee Dee river and was bound by the N.C. State Line, and a Cypress Swamp. He requested membership to Great Contenea MM in Wayne Co. N.C., where he married Lydia Woodard on 10 May 1807. Lydia was born on 11 Mar 1783, the daughter of Luke and Sarah Parker Woodard. Francis and Lydia bought and farmed land in Wayne Co., when visited by an aged Quaker Minister. After staying the night, "the minister got up early, and took a walk over the farm. When he returned, he told his host he had an impression from the lord, that it would be right for him to sell the farm and move to the territory of Indiana". Along with an utmost aversion to slavery, Francis Thomas now had reason to sell his farm (Wayne, N.C., T-478) on 11 Feb 1811 and prepare for the move north. Francis briefly returned to the Piney Grove community before leaving to Indiana. Hearing of their brother's decision, all of Francis's siblings, except for Betty, who had died earlier, also decided to move.

Received at Whitewater MM in Richmond, Indiana on 29 Feb 1812, Francis left his wife and children in the safety of Richmond while he rode out in search of a promising homestead. About eight miles north of Richmond, Francis bought a large tract of land along Nolan's fork of the Whitewater River. He worked the land, during the Indian uprisings, the family returned to the safety of the blockhouse in Richmond. Since the women and children could hardly endure the exposure of riding into Richmond for meetings, in Nov 1811 the friends of Nolan's Fork were granted a request for an "indulged meeting". Though this first meeting was in the cabin of Obediah Harris, Francis Thomas donated land along the creek, where was built in 1814, a log church heated by a charcoal fire on a dirt floor. Named for New Garden MH in N.C., the new meeting was set down 8 Mar 1815. The opening committee included members of Francis's family and friend's.

Francis must have made a trip back to North Carolina, as on 21 Aug 1813, he signed a deed for the sale of land purchased from his father in 1803.

Known for their "peace testimony," these Quakers, including the Thomas's, were active in the "Underground Railroad". Levi Coffin, a Quaker and leader of the movement was a member of New Garden, and lived in the adjacent town of Newport (now Fountain City). This hub was known as the "Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad".

Francis and Lydia lived out their life on land adjacent to the church. Francis farmed and made a living in the Crafts. From "Young's History of Wayne County-1872," he made an early profession of religion; and his well known honesty and love of peace gave him great influence as a peacemaker in the church and community". An elder, Francis Thomas died on 23 Sep 1866 and was buried at New Garden MH near his father and mother. His wife Lydia joined him on 15 Feb 1872.
