OTHER CHILDREN OF LEWIS THOMAS

SUSANNAH THOMAS
b. 6 Sep 1781

REBECKAH THOMAS

In 1783, Rebeckah's mother probably made the trip from Richmond Co. N.C to Guilford County NC while expecting the birth of a daughter. From Quaker birth records, we know that Agnes Thomas gave birth to Rebeckah Thomas on 2 May 1783 in Guilford County, N.C. After the Revolutionary War, the Thomas family returned to the sand hills of Richmond County. They lived near the border of Marlboro County SC. Before 1810, Rebeckah married Burrell Graham in either Richmond Co. NC or Marlboro Co. SC. Burrell may be the son of George Graham whose land was near that of the Thomas family in Richmond County SC. Church records do not support the possibility that the Graham Family was of Quaker faith. Burrell Graham and Lewis Thomas appear beside each other in the enlistment roster for the Richmond County Militia serving in the War of 1812. This Lewis is likely Rebeckah's brother. Before 1820, Burrell and Rebeckah Graham moved to Orange County Indiana with the Thomas family and other Quakers. The last will and testament of Lewis Thomas names Burrel Graham as a rightful heir. Ca. 1839, the Graham's moved to Clark County, Illinois where Burrel appears in the 1840 census. Listed in the 1850 mortality census, Burrell Graham died suddenly of "sudan" in August of that year. He was listed as 76 years of age and born in NC. The 71 year old Rebecca Graham is listed in the same county as head of household. Her death date is unknown. The Children of Burrell and Rebeckah Thomas Graham are:

1. Reuben Graham b. 1808 NC married first 08 Dec 1842 Sarah Partlow in Clark County Ill. She died 20 May 1858. Reuben later married Jerusha Mays, and Elizabeth Neal.
2. Nelson Graham b. 1810 NC married 17 Aug 1843 Zilphen Boswell in Orange County, IN.
3. Burrill Graham Jr. b. 1813 NC married 10 Aug 1843 Alice Leonard in Crawford County IN. She died 1863 in Illinois.
4. Lewis Graham b. 1822 Orange County IN, married first 16 Mar 1848 Catherine Partlow. She died on 01 Jan 1866. Lewis married second Juretta Ann Mills.
5. Agness Graham b. 1824 Orange Co. IN, married 19 Sep 1840 George W. Bryant.

Knowing only the mentioning of Burrel Graham in the last will and testament of Lewis Thomas, it was a great day when I was introduced to Robert Wall's research which is found on the Clark County, Illinois Genweb page. He has allowed me to use the information and we are presently working to determine if George Graham is the father of Burrell. Stay tuned. To see more about this family, please go to

TILDEN THOMAS

Born on Mar 1785 in Guilford County , N.C., Tilden Thomas returned with his parents to the Piney Grove community on the N.C. and S.C. border. He witnessed several of his father's land transactions in the 1790's. As per marriage bond dated 2 Mar 1815, Tilden journeyed to Guilford county where he married to Mary Hiatt. Oddly, in the minutes of Piney Grove MM, Tilden and family were granted certificate to Lick Creek MM in Washington (later Orange) County, Indiana. Upon reaching Indiana, he was disowned for marrying out of unity. Mary Hiatt Thomas must have died before 1829 since in an Orange County marriage bond dated 16 Dec 1829, Tilden Thomas married Ruth Lynch. Also, in Lick Creek Minutes on 16 May 1830, Tilden was reported to have married out of unity. On 10 Mar 1836 Thomas Lindley sold Tildon forty acres in Orange county.

LEWIS THOMAS, JR.

Lewis Thomas,Jr., was born in Guilford County on 1 Nov 1786. Returning with his parents in 1787 to Richmond County , he requested transfer of certificate, dated 15 Jun 1811, to a meeting in Ohio. Young, single, and looking for adventure, Lewis ,Jr. moved to Indiana three years before the rest of his family. He probably tagged along with his cousin Francis since they were both received at White Water MM, in Indiana on 29 Feb 1812. Lewis probably helped out with his cousin when in 1815 he received word that his family had arrived a hundred miles away at Lick Creek. On 29 Jul 1815 he was granted certificate to Lick Creek MM.

Lewis, Jr. married on 29 Jan 1823 at Lick Creek MeetingHouse to Lydia Bundy. She was born on 7 Oct 1806, the daughter of Gideon and Rachel Bundy. On 19 Jul 1828, Lewis and friend Christopher Hill recorded the Tittle for land adjacent to Beech Grove MH. In 1836, he and family moved to the Mississinewa Quaker community in Grant County. On 3 Jun 1854, they transferred membership to nearby Pipe Creek-Amboy MM in Miami County ,Indiana. Lydia died on 4 May 1854, and her husband Lewis, Jr. died shortly after on 17 Aug 1854. Both were buried at Amboy cemetery . Their children were:

1. Sarah Thomas b. 4 Sep 1825 d. 5 Oct 1891 bur Back Creek Friends Cemetery.
2. Agnes Thomas
3. Amos Thomas b. 10 Jan 1832 married first on 24 Feb 1858 at Fairmont Friends MH to Anna Beeson b. 30 Jul1836 d. 28 Oct 1858. They lived east of Fairmont near Lake Galatia and had one daughter that died in infancy. After the death of his wife Anna, Amos married at Fairmont MH on 22 Feb 1860 to Nancy Newby b. 3 Mar 1830 d. 11 Jul 1908.Their children were; (A)Lydia Thomas b. 4 May 1861 d. 15 Dec 1904; (B)Micajah C. Thomas b. 10 Jan 1863 d. 10 Aug 1953, married Miriam Etta Rich; (C)Sarah[Sally] Thomas b. 8 Sep 1865 d. 28 Jul 1940 married David Jones; (D)Lewis Thomas b. 19 Oct 1866 d. 14 May 1903, married to Mary Lusina Rich; (E)Eli Thomas b. 1 Aug 1868 d. 24 Feb 1907; (F)Hanley Thomas b. 2 Dec 1870 d. 18 Dec 1947.

From an article in an Indiana Newpaper, I found this: Known as a "Thee and Thou" Quaker, these interesting two anecdotes were recorded by a schoolteacher named William Ware. Once a salesman called on Amos and addressed him; "Is this Mr. Thomas?' Amos replied in his quaint Quaker fashion, "No, this is not Mr. Thomas. It is Amos Thomas, and I'll give thee to understand that Quakers don't Mr. each other". As for Amos and his lay preaching: following Quaker custom, Amos generally entered the Friends MeetingHouse wearing his hat. He slowly moved down the aisle to one of the front benches. People amusedly watched him as he sat down, comfortably arranged himself, and then removed his hat and put it under the seat. If during the unprogrammed meeting, Amos felt called to speak, he regarded that he was the voice of the Spirit. In no way, he thought, should be influenced by the response of the people who might be listening to him. He therefore generally looked over the heads of his congregation, fixing his eye on some object in the opposite direction of the facing bench where he was sitting. He told people who questioned this custom that he looked at a nail in the wall so he could escape the distractions of this present world and hear only the voice of the lord. Only under such conditions, he contended, could he minister in the will of the Lord.

Sarah Thomas was born on 5 Sep 1791 in Richmond County N. C. Removed to Indiana with her parents, Sarah married on 6 Mar 1822 at Lick Creek MH to Eli Morris. In 1813, Eli came from Symmons Creek MM in N.C. with a wife named Esther, and daughter Matilda. Esther must have died before 1822, as Sarah Morris (formerly Thomas) was condemed for marrying contrary to discipline. Sarah Morris immediately transferred membership to Honey Creek MM, followed by White Lick in 1825. The minutes from White Lick indicate that Matilda, Eli's child from his first wife, was disowned for joining an Anti Slavery Society. The minutes also list two other children named John and Abigail. In 1834, Eli and Sarah moved to Hendrick County, where in 1835 Abigail married to Asa Peacock at Westfield MH.

STEPHEN THOMAS

Stephen Thomas was born on 29 May 1793 in Richmond County. On 21 Jan 1813, at Piney Grove MH, he married to Lilly Dawson. Along with his brother Tilden, Stephen and family were granted on certificate on 18 Feb 1815 to Lick Creek MM in Indiana. In 1821 Stephen and his wife removed eighty miles west to Honey Creek MH, near Prarie Town in Vigo County. Then they transferred membership to Blue River MM Returning to the Lick Crrek community of Orange County in 1825, they purchased sixty acres from his father and mother on 1 Feb 1826. Stephen and Lilly sold this land on 24 Aug 1833. He died on 13 Aug 1859 and was buried at Lick Creek Friends Cemetery. Their children were:
