Malachi first appears in the 1820 Pike County census beside his father Benjamin Thomas. He is young, newly married, and with a young son. This record indicates Malachi was born ca. 1795-1804. As found in the 1977 publication History
and Folklore of Searcy County, Arkansas, descendant Willie Mae Thomas Siegel gives the following account of her family:
My grandfather Basil B. Thomas was born Nov. 22, 1841 at Beardstown, Perry County, Tennessee and came to Arkansas in 1848 with his parents who settledon Begley Creek just outside of the town of Leslie. His father was Benjamin Thomas born Aug 1, 1819 in Pike Co. MS. His father was Malachi B. Thomas born about 1797 in N.C., and his father was Benjamin Thomas, shownto be over 45 in the 1820 census of Pike County, Mississippi. Benjamin Thomas born 1819 was Presbyterian in belief.

My father was born May 27, 1871 in northern Van Buren County, Arkansas. Before his marriage March 24, 1898, he was a teacher in the short term rural schools in the area and also in adjoining Searcy County. When he died in 1914, he was owner and operator of a general merchandise store in Leslie, Arkansas and also a wholesaler to the surrounding county stores. He was member of Columbian Woodmen and also member of the shchool board.
