THOMAS HOOD

David Thomas (son of Benjamin Thomas) received several land grants in Anson County NC during mid and late 1790's. The warrant for survey for one of these grants was originally written for (maybe Richard) Presley. This name was stricken through and the name of David Thomas was written in on the warrant. David Thomas's surveys adjoined lands of Thomas Hood. Chainers included Pool's and Presley. Knowing little about Thomas Hood, and wondering if his life record held any clues for the ancestry of our Benjamin Thomas, I sought to evaluate any related records that I could find.

Grant # 5559, Anson NC. Ent 16 Jan 1789, Sur. 10 Nov 1792, Iss. 11 Dec 1802. For 300 acres situated on Cribbs Creek. Chainers: James E. Austin and William Pool.

Grant # 6056, Anson NC. Ent 1 Jul 1811, Sur. 1 Oct 1812, Iss. 18 Dec 1812. For 300 acres adjoining Brown, Travis, McInvales, and William Travis lands. Chainers were Jesse Lacey and James Allen.

In 1800, Thomas Hood signed a petition in Anson County that sought to maintain a secondary polling place. He was also listed in the 1800 Anson County census as 22001/11001/01.

Dated 24 Feb 1803, Thomas Hood of Wake County NC sold his Grant # 5559 to Asa Hyatt (M-16, Anson NC). E. Price witnessed the transaction. On 5 Jan 1814, Thomas Hood of Wake County NC sold his grant # 6056 again to Asa Hyatt (U-200, Anson NC). Witnesses were Jas. Allen and Charles S. Winston.

In Wake County, on __ day of Dec 1798, Thomas Hood sold 150 acres to David Hinton (Q-116, Wake NC). Situated on Buckhead Creek, the land is part of a tract originally granted to Timothy Duck on 9 Aug 1779. Witnesses to this transaction were Kibro Hinton, and again Asa Hyatt. Note that the above Asa Hyatt, James Allen , James E. Austin all came from the Wake County area to Anson County NC. Note that Asa Hyatt was the father of Dorcas Hyatt, who married Berrymon Traywick and later Leonard Musslewhite. Their daughter Elizabeth married Benjamin Thomas Jr. There is more on the relations of Berrymon Traywick, Leonard Musslewhite, and Asa Hyatt

This Thomas Hood is the son of a Thomas Hood that wrote his will in Wake County on 8 Jan 1783. Thomas Hood Sr mentioned his beloved wife Mary. He gave his son Benjamin Hood land on the mouth of Rocky Creek in Wake. Son Thomas Hood, Jr. received land on Sandy Branch near Hog Pen Branch. Son Lacey Hood received the home tract. Son David Hood received five shillings. He then mentioned daughters Dicey, and Jemima. He also mentions daughter Mary Hood and son Jesse Hood. Son Thomas and Daughter Mary were appointed executors. Witnesses were Benj Jones, Jorden Morel, and John Austin. Note that this is possibly the John Austin who moved to Anson County and whose family would become so intertwined with the Thomas family. There is no Benjamin Thomas in this will, but there are children named Thomas, Benjamin and David. Equally important, this will occurred just after our Benjamin Thomas first appeared in Anson County NC. His own son named David would have been between 8 to 12 years old.

Here are other records mentioning the Hood surname in Wake or Johnston County NC. The first books of the Johnston County Court records the following:

Book 2, page 110, May 1770. On Petitioin ordered that (-Dionnymious Wright- stricken through) Dampsey Walsh have leave to build a mill over poplar creek. It is ordered thath summons issue to john Baucom, John Beddigfield Sr., George Ward, and Robert Traywick to cause them to lay off sd. value an acre of land agreeable to Law opposite to his land on the other side of the Poplar Creek the property of Thomas Hood.

Book 3, page 291. Nathaniel & Sussannah Hood to Isaac Powell proved by Kedar Powell

Book 4, page 3. Elijah Warren to Thomas Wise proved by Nathaniel Hood.

The marriage records of Johnston County NC indicate that Nathaniel Hood married Susannah Gurley on 13 Nov 1782.

Also, the following deeds in Wake County mention the Hood Surname:

________________________

Thomas, the son of Thomas Hood Sr. likely lived for a short time in early upper Anson County. Returning to Wake County, he wrote his last will and testament in 1818. At this time, I have not found any related record for Thomas Hood that ties our Benjamin Thomas back to Wake County. However, this is another neighbor that originated in Wake County NC prior to Anson NC. A possible earlier ancestor, Thomas Hooud of province of Virginia wrote a will on 7 Apr 1764 that was probated 27 Sep 1764. He mentioned wife Mary Hood and son Nathaniel Hood. Thomas Hooud then divideds the residue of his estate among "the rest of my children", except John, whom I give one shilling. Executors were wife Mary and Charles Williams. Witnesses were William Thomas, Henry Lewis, and Francis Lewis.
