Since Anson County suffered loss of land and court records in its Courthouse fire, this list provides a comparison to known transactions. However, keep in mind that deeds were not required to be formally registered this early in North Carolina history.
The United States Bank and other more regional banks were located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Many people from central North Carolina were bound to these banks and the business trappings of early Fayetteville. Since available local and early newspaper accounts are slim for south-central North Carolina, I decided to abstract applicable records found in publications in other parts of the state. In early North Carolina, concerned citizens petitioned the General Assembly of the State in order to seek assistance or change. Long distances and hardships realized in reaching the court houses led to early petitions seeking the formation of new counties. Also, complaints against individuals or places gave rise to other petitions. Petitions are valuable in that they indicate where the early inhabitants lived. This list of petitions includes some of those found in Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, and Montgomery Counties, North Carolina. Also included is an early list of voters for Richmond County, North Carolina.
