Charlotte County, Virginia
I John Stowe of the county of Charlotte in my perfect Senses & memory do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife for and during her natural life only, my tract of land, all my stock of every kind, all my household & kitchen furniture, and all my plantation tools & utensils of every kind, I also give to her absolutely, to do as she pleases with all my crops of every kind which may be on the plantation at the time of my death, & all monies which may be on hand, or which may be due me. I give to Andrew J. Middleton, (Son of Robert Dec’d) a Negro boy named Tom & the colt of the blind mare which is not to be considered a part of the stock given to my for life, to him his heirs & assignes forever. All the rest and residue of my estate of every kind. I will and devise to William B. Green in trust to & for the following uses, purposes & intents, to wit that he apply the same to the use, benefit & support of my daughter Pauline Thackston during her life free from the debts contracts or control in manner whatever of her husband Josiah Thaxton, and after her death to be equally divided amongst her children, & the descendants of her children should there be any living at the time of her death of a deceased parent would have taken if living. And should my said daughter die without any children or descendants living at the time of her death, then that she should have full power & authority to will, devise & bequeath the said property to whomsoever she may think proper by writing, executed & proved as a will, whether her husband consented thereto or not. And if my said daughter die without issue or descendants, or should fail to make a will, devising the said property, then I wiwll & devise the same to my nephews John Adams of the county of Halifax & to Thomas Stowe, to be equally divided between them, to them their heirs & assigns forever. Lastly, I do hereby appoint the said William B. Green executor of this my last will & testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 2nd day of April one thousand eight hundred & thirty nine.

At a court held for Charlotte County December 2nd 1839
This last will and testament of John Stoe Dec’d was presented in court & the same was proved by the oaths of the three subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded and William B. Green the executor and trustee named in this said will appeared in Court and renounced the Execution thereof.

At a court held for Charlotte County the 6th day of January 1840 on the motion of Sarah Stoe the widow of John Stoe dec’d, who made oath according to law and together with John W. Deshazer, Andrew Middleton, John Middleton, Cain J. Gaines, Robert J. Lipscomb, Leroy J. Farmer, William Smith, Elisha E. Hundley, & William Harris her securities entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of fifty thousand dollars conditioned as the law requires, a certificate is granted her, for obtaining administration of the said estate in due form with the will __________
