New Character Defects
Frail Health
This is the type of character who is always sick, or has a 'glass jaw'. He or she just
doesn't last long in a fight. The character's Health stat is lower than would be indicated
from the usual derived values.
1 BP: -10 Health
2 BP: -20 Health
Tires Easily
The character is short-winded, and lacks the inner reserves that some characters can draw on
in times of need. In game terms, this means that the character has a reduced Energy score than
would be normal.
1 BP: -10 Energy
2 BP: -20 Energy
Poor Reaction Time
A character with poor reaction time doesn't respond as quickly as othes, and is often taken
by surprise. They may be aware of their surroundings, just not of sudden changes in them. This has
a most detrimental effect during combat.
1 BP: The character does NOT add ACV to initiative
2 BP: As above, but also subtract 1 from initiative rolls
Haunted Past
A character with this defect has some aspect of his or her past that
constantly interferes with his life today. This can be a bad memory,
or even a good one. The theme of the 'haunting' is often something
material, such as a ring, or a bird, though it can be anything. When
presented with symbols of their haunted past, this character will suffer
a penalty on all Stat checks equal to the level of the defect.
1 BP: -1 to all Stat checks.
2 BP: -2 to all Stat checks.
Shy
It is extremely difficult for this character to associate with others,
especially in social situations. At the very least, embarassment will
keep a shy character from even approaching others. If they somehow
overcome this, they still have to deal with blushing fiercely, and
perhaps even nosebleeds if dealing with members of the opposite sex.
1 BP: The character can be social, but will stutter, blush, or bleed from the nose.
2 BP: The character is painfully shy, and will only associate with those he or she
trusts completely.
Bad Reputation
For whatever reason, the character is seen as part of 'the wrong crowd', whether it's
true or not. Somehow there has been negative connotations connected with the character's
name.
1 BP: Minor reputation. Only those who know you personally know of the reputation.
2 BP: Major reputation. Lots of people have heard of you. GM's discretion on any given stranger.
Victim
For some reason or another, this character rouses the wrath of others, usually at innoportune times. The displays of such ire can range from teasing and name-calling to actual physical violence. At the 2 BP level, the character will be slapped across the face, at least, one or more times per game session.
1 BP: Generally harmless (at least physicallY), the character is teased and 'picked on' frequently.
2 BP: At this level, the character is often the target of physical attacks, sometimes even elaborate ambushes.
Inconvenient Size
The normal world is either too small or too large for your comfort. Everything from chairs to clothing to
tools are simply awkward for you, either because they're too tiny and delicate, or cumbersomely large. If
you are smaller than normal, you might find reaching things on tabletops or high shelves difficult. If larger,
remember to watch your head in doorways.
1 BP: Only somewhat larger or smaller, you can still find things that are close to your size, but it's difficult.
2 BP: Absolutely nothing is the right size for you, at least in 'normal' society.
Featherweight
The character, for physical or psychological reasons, is incapable of inflicting
full damage in combat. He may be puny and underdeveloped, or perhaps he dislikes
using brute force. Whatever the cause, this character deals 5 less damage per bouns
point.
1 BP: -5 damage
2 BP: -10 damage
Cannot Communicate
Your character cannot speak, write or gesture effectively enough to express ideas
or pass information to others, nor can he or she understand fully what others are
attempting to communicate. Perhaps you are an animal or alien being, or a severely
handicapped human being. Players should consider the ramifications of playing a
character with level 2 of this defect.
1 BP: You can understand some words and gestures, but are incapable of speaking or
writing yourself. Examples: Dogs and dolphins.
2 BP: You can only communicate with others through gestures, or perhaps the use of
magical or psionic means.
Illiterate
Your character cannot read or write, to some extent. While it's possible that they might be able to put down their own name or signature, an illiterate character will be at a disadvantage in a number of situations, especially school, or when trying to read a map, for example.
1 BP: Can write and recognize own name, and a few other key words or phrases
2 BP: Cannot read or write at all
Unusual Diet
Your character might not require a given substance to live, but he or she
certainly eats and drinks some pretty weird stuff. This tends to draw
attention, and may sometimes be hard to come by, depending on the circumstances.
1 BP: Your character eats and/or drinks something common and easily obtained,
that just isn't normally considered food. Paper, metal, plastic, etc.
2 BP: Diet consists of something truly out of the ordinary, illegal, or
disgusting. Carrion, uranium, or gemstones, for example.
