Caity's Sources for News
I am a great believer in old-fashioned newspapers and magazines, and this is coming from a highly computer literate IS professional. There are great online sources that are more up-to-the-minute, but for absorbing information, for me, there is nothing like the printed word. I usually read The News and Observer, and their publisher, McClatchy Newspapers, Inc., has a great web site combining the Raleigh paper with their other papers across the United States. Check out The Nando Times, which is really a good national news source, plus it has classifieds from all their papers, which include the Sacramento Bee and the Anchorage Daily News, not to mention The News and Observer. Pretty neat, huh?
I still think the New York Times is the best paper in the country, and I pick it up occasionally. For a review of the news of the world as seen by the local press, I highly recommend a subscription to World Press Review, and for the latest advancements in science and technology, I read MIT's Technology Review.
I also get news from both national and international radio broadcasts. I like National Public Radio, BBC World Service (which is rebroadcast on NPR in some areas), and various shortwave broadcasts from around the world. The best thing about listening to intenational shortwave radio stations is that you really get to hear how the rest of the world views what is happening on a day to day basis, and how they view us as well. I have a ham radio rig which also lets me listen to shortwave, but any inexpensive shortwave radio will do, and you can hear stuff from every corner of the globe.
Of course, there are plenty of cool online news sources, and one of the neat things is that sometimes, what you can find online is better than what's available in print. For example, I have family in Israel, so I care about what is happening there, and have added a new section of links to Israeli news sites below. The International Edition of The Jerusalem Post is a weekly summary, while the online edition is the full daily paper published in Israel in English. If you really want to know what is happening in that country, I highly recommend it. If you want to do business in Israel, check out the online English version of Globes, their leading business newspaper, which I have never seen sold in the United States. Finally, if you don't have a shortwave radio, or can't pick up the broadcasts from Kol Israel, you can hear them through your computer from the web.
