Defense

Playname : 3-2 Zone

1

The 3-2 zone defense has good rebounding, and good lane perimeter coverage. The weak spots are the open lane, and the attack from the corners if not used correct.

I like the 3 at the front, with the 1 & 2 at his/her sides. The 4 is weakside forward and the 5 is the strongside forward.
The 4 and 5 step up a small step from low
block and allways front (get in front)the low post players.
The reason the 3 is at the top and not the 1 is the 3 usually has a bigger body and longer arms while being reasonably fast. The 3 covers the free throw line keeping a pass from the offensive 4,with help from 1 & 2.

2

When the offense has a pass to either wing, shift like this, and allways pressure the ball, allways. It`s harder to pass.Notice the 5 fronts the offensive post player. If you don`t pressure the wing, they can drive in and shoot or pass.

3

Another popular way of attacking the 3-2 zone is the corner attack.
Most coaches will have their 5 pop out to the corner and recieve a pass.If the defense keeps the 3 high on the lane, the 4 is wide open for a pass,if the defensive 4 covers the offensive 4,then that leaves the off 3 open for a break to the basket and a pass.Let me explain, the blue 3 stays high on the lane, the red 4 drops low,5 passes to the red 4,the blue 4 covers the red 4,the red 3 drops dowm to the low weakside lowblock and recieves pass from red 4 for a score..

the key to defending this is to have your blue 3 cover the low block area in case the 5 pops out to the corner and recieves a pass.Your blue 4 must stay in lane,no futher than basket to the strongside.

4

use the same principles for either side

5

wing attack is a favorite too.
You must keep constant pressure on the wing player with the ball, here the red 3 drives and looks for the red 4 down the lane for a easy pass, but the blue 2 pressures the red 3,and stops the pass to the red 4.The blue 3 stays with the red 4.The blue 1 must cover free throw line area when this happens.

6

If the blue 2 and blue 3 don`t cover their man correctly, this happens,a easy score from the lane.

Most coaches attack from the corners, and attack the lane using the wings.Defend them good, and have players practice this every practice.
