Coaches call this a "box and 1" because thats what it is.The #1 player chases the ball on the perimeter, while the rest form a box around the lane and basically stay there. Each coach does things a little different,so another coach may have a different idea on a box and 1 zone defense. This is a good rebounding defense. |

if the 1 passes to the 2,then it will look about like this. The 1 puts pressure on the ball at all times. Now you do have a option here, you can have your 2 player pressure the ball and the 1 player replace her in the `box`.You can do the same on the opposite wing, the 3 and 1 can switch.

in frame 3,lets say the offense tryes a skip pass to the other wing, the 3 picks off the pass,if possible.

4
say the 2 passed to the 3 after the 3 cut across the lane, the 1 would closeout and the box would shift over to cover that area of the floor.Notice the 3 and 4 allways stay in lane here, never going past the basket.

here, the 2 and 4 cover the lane, never going past the basket. 1-If the offensive low post player[the 4]gets theball, have the 5 and 4 sandwich him in,doubleteam him.Anytime a low post player gets the ball, try doubleteaming them. 2-Never give up the baseline 3-have your defense funnel the offense into the middle of the defenders, thats where all your help is. 4-allways keep at least 2 players in the lane ,protecting it. |
