The Closeout is a very important defensive skill each player has to do good. Since we cannot draw pictures here of players,I will try to explain it. A opposing player has just recieved a pass.Your defensive player has to 'cover' him.He runs to the offensive player, and can 'jump' to him from a couple of steps out.He should 'jump to the ball'[player] with both hands up in the air. He should also stay back a arms lenght from the offensive player. In a defensive stance,he should have hands high if ball is high.Hands low,out to the side if ball is low.Hands out to the side mid-way if ball is midway. Don`t just stand there with hands up in the air no matter where the ball is. |

He should aggressively stay with his man and put hard pressure on him.The 1 passes the ball to the 2,the defender hustles ovet to him, with hands up upon arriving. The ballhandler stands still and moves the ball from low to high to midway, etc, enough to give the defender a good workout for a few seconds, say 10 seconds. Then he passes to the 3 man,and the defender runs to him and does the same. |

at this point you may start another player and do the same.

I would say do this about 10 seconds per station and let the ballhandler pass off to their next station.Make your players close out as fast as they can ,this wears out the defenders and then you switch after all defenders are done, let the ballhandlers run thru the stations. You may run any number of rep`s you wish.
