Gaming Literature

Gaming is more than just a grey box hooked up to a TV. It launched an assault on all types of entertainment media. Nintendo was and still is known for its broad range of licensed products. Nintendo comics and guidebooks were just a small part of a huge merchandising machine that continues to churn profit to this day.

In recent years, as the classic gaming community has grown and games become a huge business, serious legitamate books on the history of games have surfaced. And opportunistic publishers took advantage of the popularity of gaming to cash in with unauthorized guides and books.

Top Row, L to R

-Legend of Zelda comics. There was also Mario Brothers, Punch-Out, and Game Boy comics as well.

THE FIRST QUARTER by Steven Kent. This book, available last year, covered the first 25 years of videogame history. It's a fascinating read that focuses not just on the games, but the people behind them. Highly recommended.

GAME OVER by David Scheff. Originally released in 1993, this book is all about Nintendo's rise from 19th century playing card manufacturer to one of the most successful electronics companies in the world. This is as much an expose of Nintendo's hardball tactics and questionably legal policies as much as anything else. This is required reading for NES fans, and is actually in the UNCC library.

Complete 1995 Videogame guide- basic handbook covering codes for 1995 games.

Compute's Guide to Super NES games. This an example of an unatuthorized publisher taking advantage of Nintendo's popularity with a quick cash in book. Released in the Early Days of the SNES.

Bottom Row Top Secret Passwords- Licensed Codebook released by Nintendo in the early 90's.

The Official Nintendo Player's Guide. This is a great collectable for NES fans. Its from the very early days of the NES before it was going to be a sure success. Plenty of screenshots and maps.

Consumer Reports Hot Tips- I bought these through "book clubs" in elementary school. Unauthorized cash-in.
