When one looks at a large collection, often people can't believe someone could spend so much on old games. In order for a collection to be considered respectable it has to have dozens of carts. The truth is it is not that bad.
When one looks into the costs of building a collection compared to buying today's games, it actually compares very favorably. Most times, Nintendo and SMS carts can be found for under 5 dollars, and consoles in decent condition for under 50. Compare that to paying $300 dollars for a PS2 (or Xbox), and 50 dollars per game and the logic becomes clear. And many of the classics such as Castlevania or Contra are as fun to play as they were 10 years ago.
Of course, there will always be the rare game, import or prototype that will command a decent amount of money. However those purchases are not necessary for the average person to get a good start on the world of collecting. And of course, you never know when you will find a great bargain on a scarce item. So give it a chance.
