Why Bother?
To someone outside the hobby, one the first questions that has to be asked is "why?". Why should people bother scouring closets, garages, and attics searching for technology that was obsolete years ago? Why play old games when they have evolved to the point where they have today? Why pay money for such dusted over crap?
The best answer is that one man's junk is another's treasure. These games have an undeniable charm to them that transends technology. That is just part of the appeal. Some other reasons include:
1. More fun to play.
Back in the day, graphics were not as important to selling a game as they are today. This meant that developers could spend more time tweaking gameplay and control. The constraints of technology led to more creativity on the part of the developers. The Result? Games that were more fun to play.
2. More independent market.
Videogames weren't always a multi-billion dollar market. There was less cash investment then there is today, so developers felt free to try new ideas and genres. Result: more original and memorable games.
3. Nostalgia
As people who played these game as kids go to college and get careers, they want to return to the simple joys of being a kid. Playing the games that they loved as a kid brings back vivid memories of childhood for many. That warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia is enough for many to seek out the games that had been donated or chucked into closets.
