an interview with Deryck from...

how did you guys get started?

two years ago we all met in school and we started playing together, then we got serious and started the band.

where did the name come from?

we startd the band 41 days into the summer

if you had to describe the band in three words, what would they be?

um... melodic punk rock

who writes the lyrics?

i do

how does the whole writing process go?

well i come up with the guitar parts a lot of the time. i do that before i write the lyrics. i'm really lazy when it comes to writing lyrics. it usually takes about a month or two after i got the whole song written. we play it live an dstuff before i get the lyrics for it. sometimes i get the lyrics right away

what's more important the lyrics or the melody?

the melody

how important is your live show?

it's really important to play live but it's more important to put on a good show than to play more... we like having a lot of tircks and fun stuff

what kind of feed back are you getting?

good, the songs are going over really well

how did you guys hook up with greig?

greig is areally good firend of mine. i met him at a treble charger show and then we started talking and then just recently he took us on as our manager.

you guys also worked with Marc from len, how did that come about?

marc is a really good firend of greig and he brought him to on eof our shows. then we became good friends with marc and we started hanging out. then he recorded us and just left it at that. he recorded us back in March and that was the last thing he did with our band. (march 98)

can you talk a little about bunk?

bunk is a project that greig and i are doing. it's a record lable, we put on raves and greig manages bands (he's only managing sum41 at this moment) we started it so we could have something to put our album on. we were going to put it out on smokin' worm but some legan stuff came up so...

you guys played the 'Halifax on music festival' what was that experience like?

that was really fun, but the halifax show wasn't that great. not a lot of people showed up, it wasn't that big. we slept in our van the entire time it was freezing it was so cold. it was one of those times when everything goes wrong and everything was breaking on us. there was four of us and the van was so packed, we put beds, a t.v. and a vcr in the van. plus we got in a car accident and our van was destroyed we were stranded in New Brunswick for four days we had to cancel the rest of the shows and we had to stay in a hotel for four days.

honk if you like sum41==>

have any record lables expressed any intrest?

yeah, reight now we are shopping our demo around. there has been a few like Columbia and RCA but we're not doing much right now. we're waiting until we come out with another recording because our tape isn't that great.

have you looked at any indie lables?

not really. there's only two that we would like to go for, Grand Royal and MOJO. we're staying away from canada though. Only because we can do canada our selves, that's why we started bunk. the states are harder to do on your own.

when will you guys be putting out new stuff?

well we're going into the studio to record a full album and that should hopefully be out by may or june. i'm not too sure.

a lot of members have come and gone, are you and steve hard to get along with?

maybe... i don't know. yeah, i guess we are if you look at it that way. we just had a lot of bad luck with a lot of losers. i guess it's because steve and i are really good friends and we never found any one else who was a good friend except for dave, he's been a good friend for a long time. the three of us are really happy right now because we've been good friends for so long. i guess it's because it's hard to find people we get along with , we got along with Twitch but he left.

has he been replaced yet?

no. we have this guy filling in for us. he's in a band called second opinion.

how far would you like to see this go? far, as far as it will go

any up coming shows?

one in march, it's called Groundstock it's in Walaceburg. it's a festival. we haven't really been booking too many shows since we don't have a bass player but normally we play a lot.
