The UWA made their debut in Asheboro, NC on May 18th with a show dubbed UWA Hardcore, headlined by ECW's Ghetto Superstar Chilly Willy.
In the opener, Caprice Coleman defeated Hangtime. Hangtime did hit a nice rana early in the contest. Coleman was very funny interacting with the crowd and controlled nearly the entire contest before finishing off Hangtime with the Colesnap, a wicked kind of overhead reverse x-factor. Good match, but it was all Coleman.
Mike Gunner defeated Nitestic Eddie Brown with the blockbuster. Good back-and-forth match-up, Nitestic was pretty good, as is the norm. The hometown boy, Gunner took the win after surprising Nitestic with a blockbuster off the top rope. Good effort from both.
Up next was an inter-gender six person tag match as Simply Delicious Dino, Playboy Pete, and a hot looking rat named Flyre took on Willie Brown, Turbo, and the incredible Jade. Pete showed a lot of promise as a cocky heel and was easily the best of the six, but the work of all six overall looked unpolished. The running gag was that Flyre kept refusing to be tagged in because she didn't want to mix it up with the much larger Jade. Turned into a pier six and Jade eventually pinned Dino. Bad match.
Gotti with Lilly defeated Flex Phenom in a really good match. Gotti worked the mic before the contest and Flex eventually hit the ring and took it to Gotti with power moves. Gotti slowed the pace down and began to wear down his larger opponent. Match dragged a little in the middle but picked up some more with Lilly's involvement, which saw her hit Flex with a nice rana and a tornado DDT. With hopes of distracting the referee, at one point Gotti yelled out "Oh my God, there's Bill Goldberg" in a very funny spot. Gotti locked Flex in a Texas cloverleaf but Phenom kept coming back at him with power moves and eventually nailed the Phenom Bomb, which knocked Gotti loopy, and then followed it up with a blockbuster, but Lilly interrupted the count. Flex then broke up the pin attempt but got caught with a TKO from Gotti for the win. Very entertaining match.
In a special attraction, Matthew Helms, an 11-year old karate champion with several film and television appearances to his credit, took on manager Robert Royal. Helms was initially there just for a demonstration, but the cocky Royal interrupted and said he could match the young man move-for-move. After failing miserably, Helms used some kicks to floor Royal and score a pinfall. Helms actually showed good charisma and the whole thing came off well.
Up next was a hardcore rules three-way-dance as Dirty Money took on Haze and Caesar Augustus with Robert Royal. Caesar is a great gimmick. Think Steven Regal, without all the goodwill ambassador stuff, and as a Roman-type rather than a British-type. Augustus came out with an issue of Down With That magazine, taunting Dirty Money and his urban attire. Haze attacked Money and Augustus took that as a cue to grab a sit outside the ring and read his magazine. Royal joined him until Matthew Helms reappeared and began chasing Royal around the ring area. Eventually Augustus got involved an all three brawled in the ring, including a really cool criss-cross spot where all three were running the ropes, but the two heels stopped, leaving Money running in between them. They waited and were going to measure him with a double-team maneuver, but Money ducked just in time and each man nailed the other. The action spilled to the floor between Augustus and Haze, as Money scaled the top rope with a chair. Money dove off with a diving chairshot onto Haze on the floor and pinned him for the elimination. Augustus quickly took it to Money and rolled him into the ring where they duked it out for a few moments before Augustus got the submission victory with an inverted Indian deathlock. Good match, Money showed promise and Caesar was hilarious.
Malaki and Ali Steel defeated Tremierre Vampierre and Slash Walker in a hardcore rules tag match. Bad match, just a bunch of formless garbage can shots and stuff. Malaki pinned Tremierre with a modified side suplex.
The Ghetto Superstar Chilly Willy was out for the main event to take on Timber the Lumberjack, who jumped Willy early on the outside. Timber used a stop sign and several chairs on Willy, but the former ECW talent fired right back at him. Once in the ring, the 300-pound Timber hit a very nice moonsault for two. Willy fought back, but Timber cracked him again with the sign and began laying chairs out in the ring. He slammed Willy onto the three chairs and mounted the top rope. The big man went for a corkscrew plancha (!) but missed, landing on all three chairs himself. Willy took advantage of the mistake and hit the falcon arrow for the pin to wind up a really good show.
Final Analysis: Overall, one of the best indys I have seen in a long time. A really good group that I recommend checking out if you've never seen them.
