16,000 Suspects
After the checklist I helped to put together was published in Kisses of Death, I was contacted by Jeffrey Clem, a fellow fan, about a work that was omitted from the list. I tracked down a copy, which was easier than I had anticipated, for inclusion on this web site. I e-mailed Mr. Collins about adding the book to any future checklist, and this was his responce:
Yeah, I forgot about this.
Barb did a chapter (actually I ghosted it for her -- only time I've ever
done that) and I wrote the wrap-up chapter, tho some idiot wrote another
chapter undoing everything I did. It was a fund-raising public radio thing
in Iowa.
This signifies why I don't like to be involved in these round-robin affairs
when some of the players are not professionals. I had the difficult task of
reading everybody's chapters and coming up with a solution for a mystery
that involved many, many hands (only a few of which were pros), and to
manufacture a satisfying conclusion...I was pleased to have done all this,
and then some silly ass undoes EVERYTHING and gives the book a dopey second
ending.
As Popeye once said, PHOOEY.
Max
The book is referred to as a RAGBRAI Mystery. RAGBRAI stands for the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.
