Jessica, our Granddaughter, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, at 15 months of age. From the moment of diagnosis all our lives were changed, forever.

Over the years, I have accumulated a lot of bookmarks for sites with diabetes information. I want to share these links with anyone trying to gather information on Type 1 diabetes. I hope they are helpful. If nothing else, they may point you in the right direction.

U.S. agency approves glucose monitor for diabetics

GlucoWatch Monitor A study of 39 diabetics, done at The University of Colorado, found GlucoWatch provided glucose readings that were nearly identical to those obtained using traditional monitors. The findings will be presented at ADA's meeting in San Diego, this month (June '99). The GlucoWatch, which is awaiting federal approval, automatically checks blood glucose every 20 minutes and sounds an alert if the reading is too high or too low. If approved, the device could be sold in the next year. The device, made by Cygnus of Redwood City, Calif., sends tiny electric currents into the skin, opening the pores and extracting a minute amount of glucose fluid. A sensor underneath the watch absorbs the fluid, then sends a reading, which appears digitally on the watch. Patients may experience a little tingling when the device is first put on and some skin irritation. The device is powered by an AAA battery, is expected to sell for $300. The sensors are changed every day and cost about $4. Once a day, the patient has to calibrate the device by performing a traditional finger-stick procedure. Read more about this device at their web site. This information was written by Paul Galewitz and made available through the AP

Children's health insurance programs
This link has a list of health insurance programs for children who are not eligible for Medicaid. Not all states have such programs. Some, like Hawaii and Minnesota, have expanded their Medicaid programs to serve children in higher income brackets. If you do not see a program listed under your state, check with your state department of health or governor's office for more information.
