_____Best Friends
Chapter 8

"C'mon Meggie, let's go think of a reason for you to see Nick, so you can show off the new you," Meg said, gettin' out of Meggie's car and walking through the drive way to the back door. She stopped dead in her tracks. "Ooh, look who it is," she said, quietly, referring to Nick and Brian, who you could see clearly through the fence seperating Nick's and Meggie's backyard. "Hello Nick, Brian. How are you guys today?" Megan asked, politly.

"We're doin' good," Bri answered. He saw Nick freeze, and the sight of Meggie. Brian just shook his head, and smiled, slightly.

"Why don't you boys come over for awhile? We could have some fun," Meg said, flirting, while looking over at Brian in just his swimming trunks. She grinned when she saw the terrified expression on Meggie's face.

"We'll be right over," Bri said, quickly gettin' out of the pool. He knew that Megan's idea of fun was making out with him. The two weren't going out, because they are so afraid to commit to each other, although they never fooled around or dated anyone else. Meggie thought it was rather pathetic. They liked each other alot, yet they did nothing about it, kinda like her and Nick. Bri and Nick went back to Nick's house to change into dry clothes, and then they headed straight to Meggie's.

"Guys, we're here," Nick said, opening the door, and wandering inside. Him and Brian walked into the kitchen, where they found Meggie and Megan, sipping Pepsi.

"That was fast," Meggie commented, raising her eyebrows. She was trying to act as normal as possible around Nick, so he wouldn't suspect anything weird was going on. They had been best friends for a long time, and had learned to read each other pretty well. Nick laughed nevously, while looking down at his feet.

"Hey Meggie, is that a new dress?" Brian asked her, knowing he had never seen her wear it before. Time to put his plan into action.

"Yeah. I got it today," Meggie told him, while looking down at her dress.

"I like it. What do you think Nick?" Bri asked, oddly. He smiled at Nick, and saw the annoyed expression he gave him.

"It looks great on you, Meggie," Nick agreed, through gritted teeth. He looked her up and down, and nodded, agreeing once again.

"Thanks you guys," Meggie said, accepting the compliments, but feeling uncomfortable under their stares.

"Hey Bri, wanna go upstairs?" Meg asked, giggling.

He smiled, slyly, and raised his eyebrows. "Sure," he answered. "Tell her," he whispered into Nick's ear.

"Meg, what are you doing?" Meggie asked, mumbling. She crossed her arms across her chest.

"Leaving the two of you alone," Meg answered, simply. "Bye." She waved at the two, before Brian pulled her upstairs.

"So, how was your date last night?" Meggie wondered, trying to make normal conversation.

"It sucked," Nick said, plainly.

"Why?" Meggie asked, laughing a bit.

"I had someone else on my mind," Nick said, quietly.

"Someone?!? Nicky, when you're on a date, you're actually supposed to think about your date" Meggie told him, hiding jealousy. She seemed incredibly stunned that he would just do that.

"I know, but this girl is too special to forget," Nick said, his eyes sparkling when he thought of her.

"Oh, so who is she?" Meggie asked, wanting to know who had won her Nick's heart.

Nick looked at her for a minute, before changing the subject. "Guess what? I drew this really awesome pic. Wanna see it?" he asked, excitedly. When it came to drawing, almost nothing could make him happier. It was like he could escape from everything, and just totally get lost in the picture.

"Yeah, sure," Meggie said. She figured it was best she didn't know. She might have been thrown in jail for murder had she found out.

"K, I'll be right back." Nick quickly ran out of her house to get his sketch book, from his own home. Meggie waited for him on the sofa, doing nothing except staring out the window at the few cars passing by. He rushed back in, out of breath, and handed her the book, flipping to the page with his new drawing.

"Holy shit, that's wicked," Meggie commented, seeing the villan Nick had drawn.

"Thanks, I'll be back in a sec," Nick said, getting up, quickly.

"Where are you going?" Meggie asked him, looking up.

"Bathroom," he said, before rushing off.

Meggie started flipping though all the pages, remembering most of them, when something caught her eye. It was a page closer to the back. It read 'PRIVATE,' in big bold letters. Meggie knew turning the page was wrong, but her curiousity got the best of her, and besides, she more than likely knew what was so private about it. What she saw on the next page surprised her more than anything. It was a picture of her and Nick cuddling in each others arms. The oppisite page said; "Nickolas Gene Carter loves Meggie Holly Evigan forever." Meggie gasped, holding her hand lightly across her mouth, in shock. "Oh my God. Unbelievable," she said, not realizing Nick had come back from the bathroom, and was now standing behind her. He peered over her shoulder and saw what she was looking at. His eyes spread wide. He had almost forgotten what he had drawn that morning before Brian came over. He leaned down, placing his hands on Meggie's bare shoulders {Author's note: She wasn't naked, the dress was strapless.}

"You're that someone I was thinking about last night," he whispered in her ear. Meggie jumped up, surprised. Even though that was what she wanted, in a way it wasn't. Her emotions were mixed, and not knowing what to do, she ran upstairs to her room. "Meggie, wait," Nick said, hoping he hadn't ruined their friendship, but it was too late.

"You guys out," Meggie said, in tears, as she pointed at the door. She hadn't even noticing that she walked in on Bri and Meg making out.

"Meggie, what's wrong?" Megan asked, concerned. She sat up, leaning on her arm.

"Nothing, now could you please get out?" Meggie said, pushing them out. Brian and Meg went downstairs, and saw Nick sitting sadly down on the sofa, all by himself.

"Yo Kaos, man, what happened?" Brian asked, sitting beside him. He knew by the look on Nick's face that it had to do with Meggie.

"Well, I showed her that new picture, not the one of us, but the other one, and then I went to the bathroom, and she saw the pic of us cuddling, then she saw what I wrote, and I came back and saw what she was looking at, and so I told her, and then she ran upstairs," Nick said, breathless.

"Wait a minute," Meg said, confused. " Do you like Meggie?"

"Uh huh, but now she hates me," Nick said, burying his face in his hands, sadly.

"No, actually she doesn't. She told me today that she likes you, very much," Megan told Nick, as a smile spread across his face. But the smile soon faded.

"Then why did she run upstairs?" he asked, disappointed. He held his head in confusion.

"I don't know why, but I'll go and find out. Be right back," Meg said, getting up, and going upstairs. She knocked on Meggie's door.

"What?" Meggie asked, quietly.

"Meggie, it's me. Can I please come in?" Meg pleaded. When Meggie didn't answer, Meg just entered. "So, you gonna tell me why you're crying?"

"I'm not," she said, wiping at her eyes.

"You were," Meg said, sitting down on the bed beside her.

"No, I wasn't," Meggie argued.

"Yes, you were. Your eyes are all red, and puffy. Nick told me what happened downstairs. But, what I came up here to find out is why you ran up here? You just told me today that you have feelings for him. Why are you up here?" Megan asked, gently, not wanting her friend to start crying again.

"He scared me. Alot. I do have feelings for him, but I really don't think a serious relationship would work out for us. We're best friends, and as long as we keep it that way, no one can get hurt," Meggie said, holding back tears that threatened to spill over.

"You're wrong," Nick said, from the doorway. "Someone has already gotten hurt. When you rejected me, you broke my heart. I believe we are best friends for a reason. And that reason is, we were meant to be together, but we needed a way to find out, and being best friends was that way. We know each other inside and out. We were meant to be together," Nick told her, sitting down in Meg's place after she left.

"Nick, you're scaring me," Meggie said, moving away. "I do like you. I'm not gonna deny it, but I really am not ready for a relationship between us. You gotta understand that," Meggie said, tears trickling down her cheeks. "I have a boyfriend."

"Meggie, please sit down," Nick said patting the bed. Meggie sat down. Nick took her hand into his. Meggie was gonna pull away, when she realized there was nothing wrong with him holding her hand, they did it all the time. "I need to tell you something very important. It might help you believe that we were meant to be together," he said. Meggie was about to interupt, but Nick shushed her. "Just listen, and then you can have your say. I had a dream. You and me were in it. We were cleaning up the kitchen, 'cause we just had a food fight. I slipped and fell. I took you down with me. You fell on top of me. We kissed for a couple minutes. Awhile later, you were leaving and I walked you out. We kissed again, more passionate this time. Are you even listening?" he asked, noticing the dazed expression on her face.

"Yes," she answered. "Did you give me a note? Explaining how much you love me? And then I called you when I got home?"

"Yeah, how did you know?" he asked, squeezing her hand, hoping this was going to turn out like he had planned.

"I had the exact same dream," she told him, surprise showing in her eyes.

"Yeah, right," he mumbled. He looked away, unable to believe her.

"Honest to God. How would I have known the ending?" she asked, staring his straight in the eye.

A wide smile spread on his face. "You see! We were meant to be!!! Just you and me," Nick said, still holding her hand. "That's the way it was meant to be. That's the way it should be. So, why won't you just let it be?"

"Nick, I thought I could be with you. After that dream, I finally realized that I do have very strong feelings for you. And, I might have done something about it, but as you know, I have a boyfriend that loves me," Meggie said, sadly.

"But, do you love him?" he asked. Meggie didn't answer, and looked away. "Hon, do you love him?" he asked, slowly, forcing her to look at him.

"Yes, yes I do," she answered, finally.

"Look me directly in the eye, and tell me that you love him. That you wanna be with him...instead of me," Nick told her. "If you can do that, then I'll let you go."

Meggie looked at Nick, deep into his eyes. "I love him," she said.

"What about the last part? Say the last part, and I'll leave you alone. And, please baby, whatever you do, don't lie to me," he pleaded.

Meggie sat there, silent. "I can't. I can't choose between you and him. I just can't," Meggie said, as tears started spilling over her eyes.

"I didn't think so," Nick said, cupping her face with his hands, and bringing it closer to his own face, slowly. He longed to kiss her, knowing it would be even better then in his dream.

"Nick, please stop," she begged, knowing she shouldn't go this far.

Nick shook his head no. "It's too late to stop," he whispered, before brushing his lips against Meggie's, forming a kiss. Meggie had the chance to pull away, but she didn't. She couldn't. A strong force was keeping her where she was. Love. Nick wrapped his arms around her waist, as Meggie cradled his neck in her hands. After showing each other just how much each of them cared, Meggie realized what she was doing was wrong. She had a boyfriend that she loves.

She pulled away. "Nick, we have to stop," she said, unable to tear her gaze away from his blue eyes.

"Why?" he asked, even though he already knew the answer. He pouted his lips, hoping to change her mind.

"It's not right," she said, forcing not just him, but herself, to believe it.

"It sure as hell feels right," he told her, softly.

"I know it does Sweetie. It feels right to me to, but that doesn't make it right," Meggie said, rubbing his cheek, lovingly.

"You're right. I'm sorry," he apoligized.

"No, don't be sorry. I'm not sorry," she said.

"Let's go downstairs before something else starts," Nick said, walking towards the door, forcing himself to leave her loving touch.

"Nicky, wait. Can I please have a hug?" Meggie asked, giving him the puppy dog face she knew he couldn't resist.

He gave her a confused look. "You sure?"

"Yes, I want a hug from my best friend, so get your ass over here," she ordered. Nick walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her body, just like she did with him. She kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you," she whispered.

"For what?" he asked, confused.

"For always being there for me, and understanding everything. No matter what, you will always be my best friend, and for that I love you," Meggie said, sincerly. They stood together, still hugging each other, when they heard the phone ring.

A few seconds later, they both heard. "MEGGIE, PHONE," Meg screamed from downstairs. Meggie walked towards the door.

Nick called her back, wanting to tell her something. "Meggie, I love you too. May I escort you downstairs?" he asked, in his best british accent.

"Yes, of course." She smiled at him.

"Good," he said, picking her up and 'escorting' her downstairs, by carrying her over his shoulder.

"What the hell are you 2 doing?" Bri asked. He was happy to see the 2 talking again.

"I escorted her down here," Nick said, smiling innocently.

"Hello?" Meggie said, picking up the phone. "Oh, hey Paul. Yeah, we're still on for tonight. 6 is good. Alright, I love you too. Bye." She hung up the phone, a guilty expression on her face.

"Who was that?" Meg asked, knowing exactly who it was.

"Paul," Meggie said, quietly, looking at her feet.

"What the hell did he want?" Meg asked, in a bitchy tone, not wanting Meggie to hurt Nick.

"He just wanted to know if we were still on for tonight," Meggie said.

"And?" Meg asked.

"I said 'yeah'," Meggie answered.

"You said 'yeah'?!? Knowing that you'd hurt poor Nick's feelings?" Brian asked, looking sadly at Nick.

"Well, you guys, Nick and I have reached an understanding. Even though we both have feelings for each other, he learned to accept the fact that I have a boyfriend, just like I have for 3 years," Meggie said. " I gotta go get ready." She walked upstairs, and changed into cargos and a Tommy Hilfiger tubetop. She put her hair in pigtails, and redid her make up.

Nick opened the door, and peeked his head inside. "Hey Meggie. Sorry I had to come up here, but Meg and Brian were making out again," he apoligized, entering the room fully, and sitting down on her bed.

"It's alright. Sit down, get comfortable, and kiss me," Meggie said, sitting down beside him.

"Excuse me?" Nick asked, shocked. She had never been so straight forward in her life.

"I said kiss me," Meggie repeated.

"But, umm, you have a boyfriend," Nick said, quietly.

"Yeah, I know. But this is the only time I feel I can, so just shut up and kiss me please," Meggie ordered.

"No problem," he said, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her deeply, their tongues exploring each other's mouths. He layed her down softly on the bed, crawling on top of her. They made out for 10 minutes, when Nick stopped and rolled off of Meggie.

"Nicky, what's wrong?" Meggie asked, placing little kisses along his neck.

"Paul. You love him," Nick said, sadly.

"Yes, but I love you too," Meggie said, undoing the botton on his jeans.

"I know. You already told me you love me as a friend, but friend's don't act like this," Nick said.

"That's because, I love you more then a friend. And it seems to me you love me more too," Meggie observed.

"Well, I do, but I have enough respect for you not to make you cheat on your boyfriend," Nick explained.

"Oh Nicky, no one makes me do what I don't wanna," Meggie said, slipping her hands down his pants, and running her hands up and down his manhood. Nick had a very amused expression on his face. She smiled at him sweetly, and kissed his lips lightly, as small moans escaped from his mouth.

"MEGGIE, PAUL'S HERE," Megan screamed, from downstairs.

"Oh shit," Meggie said, pulling her hands out of his pants. "I'll be right there." Nick quickly did up his pants, still excited from the thrill she just gave him. "Umm, I'll call you when I get home," Meggie said. Nick nodded his head. "See ya," Meggie said, kissing him good-bye.

Meggie went out on her date, and Nick went downstairs. "Hey Kaos. Did you buy that boner or did it come free from Meggie?" Bri joked, noticing immediatly the buldge in Nick's pants.

"Shut up, B-Rok. I'm goin' home, you comin'?" Nick asked.

"No, he's staying with me," Meg said, hugging Brian.

"You guys are so pathetic," Nick said, rolling his eyes, and then leaving.
