An Introduction to Listening Skills
If you don't know how to
relate honestly and genuinely to others this world can be a
cruel, cold, and lonely place. Humans are by design social
creatures. Therefore, the skills that help us relate to each
other are important enough to be expounded upon and enumerated.
Robert Bolton, in his book People Skills, offers a five-category
approach to the skills required for interpersonal relationships.
His categories include Listening Skills, Assertion Skills,
Conflict Resolution skills, and Collaborative Problem Solving
Skills. This site has initially been designed to address the
issues of Listening and attending skills. However, in the future
it may be expanded to address some of these other issues that are
vitally important to relating to each other.

Here is some not so fine print! Even though I am a smart guy the "stuff" in these pages is not original to me. Therefore, I would like to give credit where credit is due. The majority of this information comes from Robert Bolton's book People Skills. Gerard Egans book, The Skilled Helper, has also been a great source of information and ideas for these pages. Another valuable resource has been my lecture notes taken during a course in interpersonal relationships offered by New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and taught by Dr. Pounds and Dr. Minton.
