July 22, 1999 Russian physicists have not discovered a new element... but they created one. It is unimaginably heavy. Sounds cool... but it disintegrates in 30 seconds. To these physicists, that's a surprisingly long time. The atomic weight is 114, and for now, that is it's name... element 114. However, it will eventually be named like all the others. This young addition to the periodic table is the longest-lasting of the 21 elements created in a lab. Most elements created in labs last only milliseconds before disintegrating... how useful... There are only 94 that naturally exist, but these enterprising scientists wanted more. If you're vocabulary is too small to know what in the world I'm talking about, don't worry. There are many like you. Right now, it's really a pretty pointless element. You can't really use it. It's too heavy, and it doesn't last long enough. However, it is helpful in maybe learning more about the origin of the universe. Who can tell? |
