This Indenture made this fifteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and fifty two between Philip Benjamin CARROWON of the State of North Carolina and County of Hyde of the first part and William HODGES of the same State and County aforesaid of the second part witnesseth that I the said Philip Benjamin CARROWON for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to him in hand paid or secured to be paid by the said William HODGES the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged and I the said Philip Benjamin CARROWON therewith fully satisfied contented and Paid hath Bargained and sold and do by these presents bargain, sell and convey and enfeoff unto him the said William HODGES, his heirs and assigns forever all my right, title and interest in and to a certain tract or Parcel of land Lying on the South side of Mattamuskeet Lake and on Poplar Ridge and which land Reuben BENSON Bequeathed in his last will and testament to his Dauter Eunice BENSON to have and to hold the above described land with all appurtenances as thereunto belonging unto the said William HODGES his heirs and assigns free from me my heirs executors, administrators or assigns in witness where of I hereunto set my hand and seal.

This Indenture made and entered into this 29th day of March 1876 by & between Phillip B. CARAWAN and wife Martha CARAWAN of the first part & Benajah CARAWAN of the second part, all of the County & State aforesaid Witnesseth: That the said parties of the first part for & in consideration of the sum of One hundred dollars to them in hand paid the receipt of which is acknowledged and of the other consideration hereinafter set forth hath bargained and sold aliened and conveyed and by these presents doth bargain and sell alien and convey unto the said party of the second part and his heirs and assigns Ten acres of land on Rose Bay the South West portion of the tract of land that we own adjoining O. C. SWINDELL and lying between the land we now own & O. C. SWINDELL's land, bounded on the old Turnpike road containing ten acres of land.

To have and to hold the above described land and premises with all the privileges thereunto belonging to him the said Benajah CARAWAN his heirs and assigns forever provided however that if the said Phillip B. CARAWAN & wife Martha CARAWAN shall pay or cause to be paid or cause to be paid to the said Benajah CARAWAN or his heirs one note or bond for the sum of One hundred dollars made payable to the said Benajah CARAWAN it being due the 1st day of January 187[7] – Now if the said Phillip B. CARAWAN shall pay & discharge the above mentioned note interest & cost thereon then this conveyance shall become void & of no effect but if default shall be made in the payment of said note by or on the 1st day of June 1877 then the said Benajah CARAWAN or his heirs or assigns may enter upon said premises and sell the same at the Court house door in Hyde County for cash or on a credit as he may think proper after advertising the said sale for the space of 30 days.

The due & legal execution of the foregoing Mortgage was this April 28th 1876 acknowledged by P. B. CARAWAN one of the grantors therein named
