GIBBS FAMILY OBITUARIES






CALVIN GIBBS, SR. - 1978



Calvin Coolidge Gibbs Sr., age 51 of Engelhard died Sunday.

He was born Sept. 30, 1926 in Hyde County to Ozrow and the late Picola Carawan Gibbs. He was employed with Tideland Electric Membership Corp. in Engelhard.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Douglas Gibbs of Engelhard; one son, Calvin Gibbs Jr. of Engelhard; one daughter, Alice Faye Gibbs of the home; his father, Ozrow Gibbs of Engelhard; four brothers, Linwood Gibbs of Engelhard, Chesley Gibbs of Swan Quarter, Max Gibbs of Chesapeake, Va., and Jimmy Gibbs of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Verna Carawan of Engelhard; one grandchild.

Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday at Soule Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Frank Wibiral.

MAX EDWARD GIBBS, SR. - 1999



CHESAPEAKE, VA. - Max Edward GIBBS, SR., 77, of Salton Drive, died July 26. Born in Engelhard, he had retired as the sales manager from Ames and Webb after 34 years. Mr. Gibbs was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the widower of Lily Harrison Gibbs. He is survived by a daughter, Carolenn Latham of Norfolk, Va.; two sons: Glen Frank Latham of Chesapeake and Max E. Gibbs, Jr. of Milton, Fla.; a sister, Verna Carawan of Engelhard; three brothers: Chesley Gibbs and Hugh Linwood Gibbs of Engelhard, and Jimmie R. Gibbs of Chesapeake; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. A. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park.

VERNA AMELIA GIBBS CARAWAN - 2000



ENGELHARD - Verna Gibbs CARAWAN, 75, died Monday, September 11 at Pungo District Hospital. Born in Hyde County on March 19, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Ozrow B. and Picola Carawan Gibbs. She was the widow of Maxwell Manan Carawan who died in 1979. She was a member of the Middletown Christian Church and worked at Farrow's Red and White Grocery for 19 years prior to her retirement. Surviving are three sons: Seth Donny Carawan, Danny Michael Carawan and Davy James Carawan, all of Engelhard; a daughter, Debbie C. Boomer of Raleigh; five step-sons: Maxwell H. Carawan of Scranton, Leland Wayne Carawan of Bolivar, Mo., Earl L. Carawan of Fairfield, Chester Combs and Lester Combs of South Mills; three brothers: Chesley Gibbs and H. Linwood Gibbs, both of Engelhard, and Jimmy Ray Gibbs of Chesapeake, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carawan was preceded in death by a son, Denny Max Carawan and a step-son, John A. Carawan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the family plot in Soule Cemetery in Swan Quarter. Scott Sukeforth and Steve Bryan will officiate. The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter on Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home.
