Combat Support Company
2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry
8th Infantry Division (Mech)
Mainz, Germany

JUNE 1976 - JUNE 1979

After arriving in Germany I received orders assigning me to the Mortar Platoon, Combat Support Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry, 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized). I was assigned as a squad leader, but I was reassigned as a forward observer before we got to the field. Later on I was assigned as the Section Sergeant and occasionally worked as the Platoon Sergeant.

We did a lot of training in Germany, which meant that we traveled all over the country to train.

While stationed here I passed the E-6 promotion board, but had a long wait to get promoted.

Mainz was a really nice place and I enjoyed living there. I was called in to talk with personnel from the United States Army Recruiting Command. After talking with them, I volunteered for recruiting duty and was accepted.

Unfortunately, I left Germany about a month early as I had received word that my Dad had cancer again and only had a few weeks to live. I arrived home and spent three weeks with him before he passed away. He passed away about the time that I was originally scheduled to leave Germany. Thanks to the Red Cross I made it home in enough time to spend some time with him before he passed away.
