"Another character worthy of note in Litchfields chronicles was Mr. Gardener, father of Sherman Gardener who still lives in the village. Twice in his life he subjected himself to prolonged fasts "For the good of his soul and body." At one time he fasted for thirty days and at another time abstained from food for forty days. Whether his soul and body profited by this self denial or not is not recorded."
