According to the cemetery book In Memory Of: An Index to Hyde County Cemeteries, by Rebecca Swindell and R. S. Spencer, Jr., over 6,000 graves within 319 cemeteries exist on the Hyde County mainland and Ocracoke Island. The gravestones are invaluable records that depict a very unique beauty of their own. Unfortunately, not all gravestones receive as good of care as one would expect. Some gravestones are located in the woods and overgrown with brush, while others are toppled over and broken. If you would like to take a virtual stroll through the cemeteries of Hyde County, please click on any of the cemetery links below.
If you would like to obtain photographs of your ancestor's gravestones but cannot because you live too far away, let me offer my assistance to you. I will photograph the gravestones of your ancestors for a cost that will only reimburse my expenses of film, film developing, and postage.
My only stipulation is that I will not photograph gravestones located in woods or high brush during the warm months (April through October) due to the presence of snakes, ticks, mosquitos, and other things that crawl, cling, and bite. I will only photograph gravestones in such dense locations during the cooler months. I will also photograph gravestones located on Ocracoke Island.
If you would like for me to photograph the gravestones of your ancestors, please supply the following information in an e-mail:
1. Name of ancestor(s).
2. Birth and death dates (if known).
3. Name of cemetery and township where ancestor is buried.
4. Your mailing address.
If you do not know or are unsure of the name of the cemetery in which your ancestor is buried, I can check In Memory Of: An Index to Hyde County Cemeteries. Please be specific with your requests.
