An Unexpected Assignment: Part 02
It took me a while to comprehend the question.
"It's okay if you don't want to," Nick said quickly.
"I didn't say that," I said, "Nick, of course I want to go out with you."
"Really?" Nick asked.
"Yeah," I said.
"Okay," said Nick, "Great. Is tonight okay?"
I had to think about it for a minute. "Sure," I said, "Tonight's fine."
"Do you want me to pick you up?"
"How about if I meet you some place," I said.
"Where?" Nick asked.
"The plaza," I said. AN: The plaza was Prince Kuhio Plaza, which is the biggest mall in Hilo.)
"I have no idea where that is," said Nick.
"Okay," I said, "Um...I can pick you up."
"Okay," Nick said, "Here?"
"Main lobby," I said, "What time?"
"Seven thirty?" Nick asked.
"Yeah," I said, "Okay. So I'll pick you up in the main lobby at seven thirty."
"Okay," said Nick.
"I'll see you later," I said, getting into my car. I headed home and then realized that I had to convince my parents to let me out of the house that night.
"No," was the first thing that came out of my mother's mouth when I asked her.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because," said Mom, "It's too late."
"Mom!" I said, "It's only seven thirty. I'll be home by ten."
Mom seemed to consider it. "Okay," she said finally, "But take the pager and be careful. Be home by ten."
"I promise," I said.At about seven o'clock, I headed back out again. Since we were only going to the mall, I had just thrown on a tee shirt and jeans after my shower. The traffic wasn't that bad, so I got to the Naniloa by seven twenty five. Nick was already waiting in the lobby for me.
I noticed he looked so adorable as he walked towards the car. Nick was wearing jeans and a white tee shirt with a teal short sleeved shirt over it. He had a white rose in his hands.
"Hi," he said, opening the door.
"Hi," I replied.
"This is for you," Nick said, handing me the rose as he got in.
"Thank you," I said.
As we headed off, Nick put a white Adidas baseball cap on backwards. "So are we still going to the mall?" he asked.
"Yep," I said, "Unless there's somewhere else you want to go."
"No," said Nick, "The plaza's fine."
When we got to the plaza, I parked in front of the food court and we got out of the car.
"What do you want to do?" I asked Nick, "There really isn't much."
"That's okay," said Nick, "Can we go eat?"
"Sure," I said, "Where do you want to go?"
"You have a McDonalds, right?"
"Of course" I said, "It's right over there."
Nick and I went to McDonalds. I was surprised to see that the line was short.
"Oh my gosh," I said, grabbing the sleeve of Nick's shirt.
"What?" he asked, alarmed.
"Look," I said, pointing to the display for the Happy Meal toys, "They have the Winnie-the-Pooh toys."
"Do you want a happy meal?" asked Nick.
"Okay," I said.
When we got to the front of the line, Nick ordered his food and a Happy Meal for me.
"Here you go," he said, handing it to me.
"Thank you," I said.
The two of us found a table near the back and Nick went to get our sodas.
"Which one did you get?" Nick asked, as he sat down.
"Pooh," I said, "The one I wanted."
"Cute," said Nick.
After we were done eating, Nick and I went walking around. He got recognized a couple of times, but it wasn't too bad.
"So are you going to our concert?" Nick asked, as we walked into Most Irresistable, a store that sells Sanrio merchandise and things like that.
"Of course," I said, "I wouldn't miss it. Why?"
"Just curious," said Nick.
I was looking at some stuff when Nick called me over. He was standing in the corner by the sticker machine.
"You want to?" he asked, motioning towards the machine.
"You go first," I said.
"You mean, take one by myself?" Nick asked.
"Yeah," I said.
"No thanks," said Nick, "You take one."
"There's a machine like this outside," I said, "But it has borders that are less...well...girly."
"You take in here and I'll take outside," said Nick.
"Okay," I said. I stepped into the booth and inserted three dollars. Then I took a sheet of pictures.
When I was done, Nick decided to take on with me. Then we went outside to the other machine. The one that Nick had picked out was this border with "Da Bomb!" on it. He had this adorable smile plastered on his face. As soon as the stickers were done, these girls came running up to Nick and asked if they could each have one. Nick gave the three of them his sticker picture and as soon as they had walked away, more girls came running up.
"I'm sorry," said Nick, when they asked him for stickers, "I took them to give to my family."
The girls settled for his autograph.
"Can I have your picture?" Nick asked, as we walked towards Tempo, a music store.
"Only if you give me one of yours," I said.
"Oky," said Nick.
He gave me one of his pictures and I gave him one of mine.
"Where am I supposed to put this?" I asked him.
"I don't know," Nick said, pulling out his wallet.
We sat down on a bench right outside of Tempo and Nick stuck the picture in his wallet on one of the photo inserts. He put a sticker of the two of us next to it. I could see that he had pictures of his family there too.
"Oh I know," I said, "Hold this."
I stuck the picture on the tip of Nick's finger and pulled this friends file I always carried with me out of my bag. I stuck the picture on the next blank page.
"You have to fill this out now," I told Nick, handing him the page.
"Okay," he said.
He filled out both sides of the card and then we went walking around some more.
The plaza closed at nine, so we left just before then. We headed back to the hotel.
"Do you want to come up?" Nick asked, as we pulled up to curb in front of the lobby.
"I should actually get home," I said, "Before my mom has a heart attack or something because I'm out so late."
"Oh, okay," said Nick. He leaned over and kissed me before getting out of the car. "Bye."
"Bye," I said, shocked.
I drove away after Nick got out and headed home.
