“I love you too, Lindsey.” He stood there holding me in his arms under the starry sky.
~*~*~AT THE SAME TIME~*~*~
“Hello?” Brian answered his phone.
“Brian...” Mary sobbed.
“Mary, are you ok?”
“No,” she cried.
“Oh my god, what’s wrong?” he asked with concern showing in his voice.
“I just a got a call...... my dad...had... had a heart attack. Lindsey still isn’t home and I... didn’t know who to call. Can I come over?” she said in between sobs.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. of course you can come over.”
“Ok...bye.” She hung up her phone and rushed over. When he answered the door, neither said a word to eachother. He just reached out his and and she took it. Brian led her out back and they sat by the beach. There was a long, akward silence until Mary finally spoke, “I can’t believe he’s gone...he’s done so much for me.....he’s always been there for me and I wasn’t there...” she cried harder.
“Shhh....it’s ok,” he comforted her. He enveloped her in a hug as they sat in the sand and she didn’t pull away like she normally would. To Brian, this seemed to be the perfect time to talk about what had been on his mind the past few days. “Mary,” he whispered into her ear, “I know about David and Claire. Lindsey told me.”
“She did?” she sobbed more as thoughts of her past relationship with David flooded her brain, taking her mind off her father a little.
“Yeah.” He rubbed her back in attempt to comfort her. “I’m sorry,” he said barely above a whisper. As he was holding her under the stars, he began singing softly into her ear.
“From the first day, that I saw your smilin face, honey I knew that we would be...together forever. When I asked you out, you said no but I found out, darlin that you’d been hurt. you thought that you’d never love again. I deserve a try honey, just one, give me a chance and I’ll prove this all wrong. You walked in you were so quick to judge, but honey he’s nuthin like me.
I’ll never break your heart, I’ll never make you cry, I’d rather die, than live w/o, you. I’ll give you all of me honey that’s no lie.” He continued to sing the rest of “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” as he held her tight. He had chosen this song because it fit their situation PERFECTLY! Every word matched what they were going through.
By the time he had stopped singing, Mary was still crying, only now she was crying tears of happiness.
“Promise?” she asked referring to the song. (As in promise he’ll never break her heart.)
“Promise,” he said looking into her eyes.
“Yes, I will,” she said.
“Will what?” he asked confused.
“Remember in the hospital when you asked me out on a date? Well, I’ve reconsidered, and yes, I will go out with you.”
“Really?” his eyes lit up.
“Of course. You are such a sweet guy, Brian, how could I ever let you go?”
~*~*~*~*~*~A MONTH LATER~*~*~*~*~*~
Brian and Mary had been practically inseperable since that night on the beach. Mary was still recovering from her father’s death though. Nick and I were still going strong, too. That next day, he had helped me move all my stuff into my new home. Kevin and Howie came back to town from visiting family a week later.
“Hello?” I answered my phone one afternoon.
“Hi!”
“Hey Bri, what’s up?”
“I have great news!”
“You guys don’t hafta go back on tour!” I said only half joking.
“Nope, but almost as good. Aaron’s band is auditioning for a flute player to come on tour with us to play during, “One Bad Apple.””
“NO WAY!!”I screamed.
“Yep. And I know how good at the flute you are and I’m sure you’d get picked if you tried out.”
“You have to take me to the auditions!”
“Ok, definately.”
“Does Nick know?”
“Nope. Not yet.”
“Don’t tell him, kay?”
“No prob, I’ll pick you up in an hour and take ya down.”
“Thanks sooooo much Brian!”
“Yep! See ya.”
~*~*~TWO HOURS LATER~*~*~(Sitting in the auditioning building....waiting)
“I’m so nervous,” I said to Brian.
“Don’t worry, you’ll do great!”
“Thanks for the confidence.”
“Lindsey Van Fleet,” the woman called.
“Gotta go,” I turned to him.
“Good luck,” Brian said kissing my cheek for good luck.
“Thanks,” I walked into the room and played with all my heart and did my absolute best. This was my one chance to be with Nick the whole time he tours and I wasn’t gonna screw it up. When I was finally finished, they said, “Thank you, Lindsey. We’ll call you and let you know.”
When I walked out, Mary was sitting with Brian. “Mary!!”
“Brian called and told me everything so I rushed over. How’d ya do?”
“I think I did really well.”
“Good!!”
~*~*~A WEEK LATER~*~*~
Nick and I were watching the movie “Jawbreaker” when the phone started to ring at my house. I aswered and a person asked, “Is this Lindsey?”
“Yes, can I help you?”
“Yes you can. This is Mark from Aaron Carter’s touring band.”
I knew this was it, I either made it or I didn’t.
