Chapter 20

"I've got it. I'll kiss Nick in front of Emmalee's face. That's got to work. I mean, their relationship has to be fragile right now," Jen said, as sat on her plane seat. She turned her head, and looked at Emmalee who was sleeping on the seat across from hers. Jen rolled her eyes, and closed her eyes, closing herself off from everyone else, alone in her fathomless thoughts.

"When are we getting to Australia?" Nick asked, unable to fall asleep. Brian turned towards him.

"Not any time soon, Nick, so I suggest you try to get some sleep," he muttered, turning his head the other way, and getting into a more comfortable position. He was soon asleep again. Nick sighed. He was the only one awake in the whole plane. Well, except for the pilot. He turned his head, and looked at Emma's soft beautiful face. He couldn't suppress the urge to touch her, so he just took her hand lightly in his. She stirred, and slowly opened her eyes.

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry, baby, I didn't think you'd wake up," Nick apologized, embarrassed.

"It's okay, Nick, don't worry about it." She yawned, and looked at her watch. "Wow, it's so late. What are you doing up? Can't get to sleep, huh?" she asked. She leaned closer, and put her head on his shoulder.

"No. I dunno what it is, though," Nick whispered. Emma took her hand and slid it up and down Nick's chest soothingly. Nick's heart started to thump faster. Emma felt it, and almost chuckled. She raised her head, and kissed Nick softly on the cheek.

"Do you want to take some sleeping pills? I have some," she offered. Nick nodded.

"Yeah, maybe that will help," he said. Emma sat up, and reached for her purse. She opened it, and took out the pain reliever bottle. She shook out two pills, and handed them to Nick, then put the bottle back in her bag. She took out the bottle of water she kept there and gave it to Nick.

"Here," she said. Nick swallowed the pills, and gulped down the water.

"Thanks, baby. Maybe now I'll get to sleep," Nick whispered, kissing Emma gently on her mouth.

Jen had awoken to the sound of voices. She fumed when she realized who it was. She opened her eyes, and stared at Nick and Emma talk quietly. Her eyes burned daggers into Emma's back.

But don't you worry, Emma darling, I'm not done with you yet, she thought angrily.

Three weeks later, they were back in America, and since they had had a sudden schedule change, they had one last concert to do in Orlando.

Emma was quickly applying Nick's make-up.

"Stop moving, Carter! Sheesh, I swear you get worse every day!" she exclaimed, frustrated.

"I'm sorry, baby. I'll try not to move," he said, with a small smile on his face.

"I should have let you Jennifer do your make-up. See how you like that if you don't stop moving," Emma threatened, half-joking.

"Okay, okay, I'll stop. Anything but that," Nick said, laughing.

A few minutes later, they were done. "There. Now go! You guys gotta start in like ten minutes," she said. Nick got up off the chair, and leaned down to give Emma a kiss. She willingly obliged, oblivious to the fact that Jen was glaring at them.

Oh, just wait, Emma. Tonight's the night. Tonight is my last chance to get Nick. And I will. I always get what I want, Jen thought smugly, turning away from Nick and Emma.

"Go, Nick, or they're gonna start without you," Emma warned, pulling away from Nick.

"Oh, as if they can," Nick said, laughing, planting a last kiss on her lips, and then walking away.

"Hey, Nick! Can I talk to you for a second?" Jen asked innocently, well aware that Emma wasn't too far behind her. She would come out of the dressing room door any second now.

Nick stopped, and looked at Jen. "What do you want, Jen?" he asked exasperatedly. Just then, Jen heard the dressing room door open, so she had to act quickly. She walked up to Nick, and put her arms around his neck, and started to kiss him very hard, pulling on his head so he won't get away. In the distance, Jen heard a low gasp. Nick finally could wrench himself away from Jen. He looked past her shoulder and saw Emmalee frozen to the ground, her mouth gaping open.

"Emma-" Nick started, pushing Jen out of his way.

"No, Nick, I don't want to hear it. I don't!" Emma started walking away. Nick ran after her.

"Perfect. Just perfect. This will ruin their relationship for good," Jen thought, as she quickly followed Nick and Emma, to hear what they were going to say, but made sure she stayed out of sight.

"Emma-" He was finally able to grab hold of her arm. He swiveled her around to make her look at him.

"What the hell do you want, Carter? Isn't that what you wanted, huh? To make a fool out of me? To laugh about me behind my back with Jennifer? You probably made Jen write that in her diary-"

Jen gasped.

My diary? What does this have to do with anything? But Nick couldn't have possibly gotten my diary. Could he? Jen thought. She tuned back into what they were saying.

"Baby, you don't understand! Jen-" Nick started.

"Jen nothing, Nick. Now I know exactly what has been going on, okay? I don't ever wanna talk to you again. And save your pitiful excuses, because there's nothing you can do to make me believe you! Isn't this what you wanted, Nick? To hurt me? Well, you have succeeded. Congratulations, Nick. You get a damn A plus for your damn effort. Get out of my life, Carter, because I don't ever wanna talk to you again!" Emma cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Please! Just let me explain! She caught me by surprise! She wanted-"

"Shut up! Shut the hell up! Didn't I tell you that I didn't want to hear you? Goodbye! It's a good thing this is the last day of the tour, because I'm glad I'll never see your pitiful face again!" With that, Emma wrenched her arm out of Nick's grasp, and ran away, her sobs making her throat ache.

Nick's eyes filled with tears. Hurt. Hatred. Love. Malice. Helplessness. All of those emotions went through Nick as he slid down the wall and onto the floor of the hallway. The tears slid silently down his cheeks. He looked up, and saw someone hiding behind the decoration tree. He recognized it as Jen. The hatred and malice came back, and he bolted off the floor, and quickly walked towards Jen. He grabbed her arm, almost painfully.

"Do you see what you've done? How could you do this to me? How could you? After what I was gonna do for you! I hate you! I damned hate you! You've ruined my life! You've made the most precious thing in my life go away forever, and there's nothing I can do about it, because some meddling little twit is so blinded and lovesick not to see what she's doing. Don't you see the hurt and pain you're making Emma go through? Can't you see that? Or don't you have a heart at all, you stupid idiot! You're heartless! I can't believe you ruined my life! And now I hate you for it, and always will! Now it's your turn to hear it: I never ever in my entire life want to see your sorry face again, do you hear me? Do you understand? I hate you, Jennifer! And there is nothing you can do to make me stop hating you!" All of his pent up anger gone, he released Jen, and stalked off.

"Oh my God, what have I done? What have I done?" Jen cried, tears running down her face. "I've managed to break up two people who love each other, and in the process I've made the one thing that I've ever loved hate me! He was right! I can't believe I was so blinded that I didn't see what the consequences of my actions would be. I can't stand for him to hate me! I have to do something! Anything! I have to go confess to Emma. She'll have to believe me. And that's the only way Nick will ever forgive me." Jen wiped her tears, and walked out of the building. She called a cab from a pay phone, and waited in the warm summer night. Just then, as if it were a curse from heaven, thunder rolled, and lightning struck, and ran began to fall down at a very rapid rate. The cold rain soaked Jen immediately. The lightning scared her out of her wits.

"This is what I deserve," Jen thought, as she saw the cab pull up in front of her. "I deserve to look like a drowned rat." She entered the cab, and gave the driver the instructions to her house. She sat back on the leather seat, and closed her eyes.

This will all be over soon. This will all be over soon, she kept repeating to herself. I will tell Emma the truth, and then it will be all over...
