Chapter 2

Two weeks later...

"Man, Dani still hasn't called me. She probably doesn't wanna talk to me. But maybe she lost my phone number and wasn't able to contact me. I'm gonna go up to the company to get her phone number," Nick said.

"Nick, do you even know her father's name?" Brian asked. They were seated on the couch in Nick's living room. Nick looked out the window at Tampa Bay, his mind wandering.

Maybe she just pretended to like me, he thought. But maybe not. I have to take the chance and look for her. If it turns out that she doesn't wanna talk to me, then that's fine.

But he knew that it wasn't fine. Even though he had only known her for such a short time, she still intrigued him, and he wanted to get to know her.

"Nick! I asked you if you even knew her father's name," Brian repeated.

"No, but I know his last name, if it's the same as her last name. Anyway, he's the executive secretary of Jive, it wouldn't be hard at all to find out who he is."

"That's true. Well, anyway, Nick, I gotta get going. Leighanne is waiting for me so we can go out for lunch. I'll see ya later." Brian gave Nick a slap on the back, then walked out of the house. Nick sat back against the couch, and decided that he was going to find Dani Saxon.

"Dani, will you tell me who the guy you met was? It's been weeks since that summer party thing and you still haven't told me. I'm gonna bug you until you tell me," Denise warned, her arms crossed, and waiting expectantly.

Dani looked up at her sister from her desk. She was trying to study for a very important test she had the next day on Biochemistry. She sighed in frustration.

"I told you, Denise. He's just another blonde airhead," Dani repeated for the hundredth time.

"I know that! I told you, I don't mind if they're airheads!"

"Yeah, because you are one," Dani muttered to herself.

"I resent that!" Denise said, glaring at her sister. "Well, if you're not gonna tell me, fine!" Denise stormed out of the room.

Dani shook her head and started studying again.

Nick walked into the Jive main office, and up to the secretary. He noticed the glint of recognition in her eyes.

"Hi. I was just wondering...May I have the phone number for the executive secretary of Jive? I have something I need to discuss with him," Nick told the secretary.

"Why, yes of course, Mr. Carter, right away." She quickly looked up the phone number, and wrote it down on a Post-it. She handed it over to him with trembling fingers.

"Thank you...Sandra," he said, reading from her name tag. "I really appreciate it."

"No problem. And um...may I have an autograph? For my daughter..." she trailed off. He smiled knowingly.

"Sure," he agreed. He wrote a quick note and signed it. "Here ya go. Have a nice day." He turned around to leave.

"You, too."

When Nick was back at home, he looked at the number on the Post-it, and picked up his phone, quickly dialing the number. It rang four times before someone picked it up.

"Hello?" a female voice answered. He recognized her voice.

"Hey, Dani! Remember me? It's Nick Carter," he greeted.

"Nick Carter?! As in, Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys?!" she exclaimed.

Nick looked at the phone with a weird expression before putting it back to his ear.

"Yeah...But you knew that..."

"You mean, you're the guy my sister met at the Summer Bash thing?" she asked.

"Oh, I'm sorry, you're not Dani." A wave of relief washed over Nick. He hated to think that Dani had been pretending not to be a fan just to go out with him.

"No, I'm her sister, Denise," she replied.

"Cool. Um...is Dani around?" he asked.

"Well...yeah, she's here." She put the phone down. "Dani! Nick Carter is on the phone for you!"

Dani hurriedly picked up the phone from her room.

"Nick?"

"Hey, it's me. What's up? I assumed you lost my number or something because you never called."

"Oh..um...yeah, sorry, Nick, I put my clothes in the washer, and the paper crumbled," she lied.

"Oh, okay. That's okay, though."

"How'd you get my number?" she inquired.

"Oh, I have my ways..." he laughed.

"So what's up?" she asked. She had never expected to hear from him again.

"I was wondering...if you wanted to go out with me?" he asked, a little nervous.

"Um...sure, Nick. That'd be great." Oh God...I can't believe I agreed. I'll probably be bored the whole time with him talking about himself.

"Great! Just give me your address, and maybe we could go this Saturday night?"

"Yeah, this Saturday is good."

"Great."

When she hung up the phone, she lay back on her bed.

"Oh, man....What have I gotten myself into?"
