Chapter 10

Jessica stood in the kitchen, washing the dishes. She hummed while she soaped the dirty breakfast dishes, but abruptly stopped when she saw Mrs. Carter enter the kitchen. She immediately tensed.

"Uh, good morning, Mrs. Carter," Jessica greeted, keeping her head turned towards her task.

"Good morning, Jessica. I want to have a word with you," Mrs. Carter said, coldly.

"Sure, Mrs. Carter, I'll just finish these dishes-" Jessica started.

"Now," Mrs. Carter interrupted. Jessica hurriedly turned off the faucet and wiped her hands on her apron. Then she walked over to Mrs. Carter who was sitting on one of the kitchen chairs.

"Sit down," Mrs. Carter ordered. Jessica quietly took a seat across from Mrs. Carter and waited.

"I understand that you have...feelings for my son, and I want you to clearly understand that that is utterly unacceptable. My son cannot be with trash like you," Mrs. Carter stated, her eyes cold as glaciers. Jessica bit her lip to prevent her tears from overflowing. How could she be so cruel to her? Didn't she understand that true love has nothing to do with fame or status?

"So I forbid you, absolutely FORBID you to get anywhere near my son, do you understand me? Or you and your family will be sent packing from this house, do you hear me? And you know that we pay for your mother's medical bills since surely you can't. Then how would you provide for your mother? Do you want your mother's health on your conscience? Well, do you?" Mrs. Carter continued. Jessica shook her head slowly. "I thought so. So is it understood? Make up anything you want to my son, but I don't want you near him. Tell him you never loved him. That'll surely take him off your back. He has his pride, you know," Mrs. Carter said confidently. She crossed her arms and stared at Jessica. "Is it understood?"

"Yes. Yes, Mrs. Carter," Jessica whispered, bowing her head, and letting her tears flow freely. She had definitely lost Nick forever.

"Good." Mrs. Carter stood up, and disappeared out of the kitchen. Then, Jessica ran to her room, and let her pillow muffle her sobs.

A while later, there was a knock on her door. Jessica raised her head and wiped her face.

"Come in," she called out. Nick entered the room and shut it firmly behind him.

"Jess-" Nick started.

"No. I don't want to talk to you. I hate you," Jessica said with as much venom as she could muster.

"Jessie-"

"Get out of my room! I never want to see your sorry face again, you liar. I know you and that witch have something going on behind my back," Jessica lied, crossing her arms and turning her face away so Nick wouldn't see the inevitable tears that were forming in her eyes.

"Jessica, listen to me. I heard what my mom said to you this morning. I know what you're trying to do. I never thought my mom could be so cruel," Nick said, closing his arms around Jessica's shoulders, and pulling her to her feet. Jessica buried her face in Nick's chest and cried.

"You have to leave, Nick," Jessica said. "I don't want to get kicked out. My mom will get worse and worse without her medication."

"Hey, baby, don't worry about it. My mom's not gonna kick you out. I'll make sure of that," Nick said.

"Oh, no, Nick. I don't want you and your mom to be fighting over a mere servant. Your relationship will take a nose dive, and I don't want that to happen. I can't see you anymore, Nick. Please leave," she said, extracting herself from his arms.

"We can't be apart. We'll both me miserable. I love you, Jess. I won't let my mother or anyone tear us apart, and if that means to see each other secretly and carefully, then that's the way it'll have to be. Leaving you is not an option, Jess."

"But, Nick, we could get discovered-"

"No, we'll be really careful. I don't want us to break up. I love you so much, I can barely breath without you." Nick leaned down and kissed her lips softly. He wiped the tears from her face.

"I'll see you later, baby. I better go now before my mom happens to go this way."

"Okay," Jessica responded.

"Hey, I've got an idea. I'll get you a cell phone so we can call each other from our rooms. That'd be really great, don't you think?" Nick said.

"Yeah, that's a great idea, but I don't want you spending money on me," Jessica replied, crossing her arms.

"Baby, don't worry about the money. I have enough to spare. I'll get one today. I'll leave it under the kitchen sink. No one looks under there. I'll set it up before I give it to you so you can call me right away. Well, I'll call you first, okay?" Nick said.

"Okay," Jessie agreed reluctantly.

"Great. See you later, Jess." Nick gave her one quick kiss before exiting her room. Jessica flopped down on her bed, and smiled.

"Thank you, God. Mrs. Carter hasn't won the war yet."
