"Nick. What are you doing in here with...her?" Mrs. Carter asked, eyes full of disgust. "I thought I told her to..." Mrs. Carter trailed off.
"Mom, it's not her fault, I came in here because I wanted to ask her about her mother. She didn't look too good yesterday," Nick said. It wasn't necessarily a lie. Jessica's mom had been coughing a lot lately. But he didn't want Jessica to get into trouble because of him.
"Oh really?" Mrs. Carter asked, believing every word her son said. Maybe he's come to see that this piece of trash doesn't deserve him, she thought triumphantly.
"Yeah, Mom."
Jessica stayed quiet. She couldn't bear Mrs. Carter's look of disgust on her. She went back to what she was doing.
"Well, come on, Nick. I think Brian is waiting for you," Mrs. Carter said.
"Yeah," Nick said softly. He snuck a look at Jessica before he exited the room.
Jessica exhaled a breath she didn't know she had been holding. Her thudding heart slowly going back to it's normal rate.
Nick exited the mansion, and slowly trudged towards the car. He sighed. Would he ever be able to be alone with Jessica even for a full five minutes?
He got in the car next to Brian who gave him a quizzical stare.
"What's up, Nick?" Brian questioned.
"Nothing. Just that my mother will never see what would truly make me happy. And that would be to be with Jessica." Nick sighed, and stared out the window, as Brian drove. He leaned his forehead against the window, tears threatening to fill his eyes, but he resisted the urge.
"Nick...maybe you should just give up on Jessica. It's clear that your mother will never ever accept her. And I do mean never," Brian said sympathetically.
"Save your stupid advice, Bri. I don't need it right now," Nick snapped.
"Hey, sorry, I was only trying to help," Brian said defensively.
"Well, you're NOT. So spare me the agony of having to hear what everyone is telling me. I wish for once someone would understand me."
"I do understand you, Nick. But what you're not seeing is that your mother will never accept Jessica, and that's that." Nick sighed, knowing full well that Brian was right.
