Chapter 4

As Jessica tossed and turned on her bed, unable to fall asleep, Nick was sneaking down the hall down the steps to head to the maid's wing. Nick tripped over a statue, and stubbed his toe.

"Damn! Shit!" he cursed, hopping on one foot. He listened for any sign that anybody had woken up, but there was no sound, so he continue as quietly as he could down the hall. He slowly went down the stairs, and turned into the hallway that led to the maid's quarters.

He reached the door to Jessica's room, and slowly opened it, cringing when it squeaked.

"Oh my God! Who's there?" Jessica said, scared. Someone was coming into her room. She pulled the bed covers up to cover herself.

Nick entered the room, and shut the door quietly behind him. He saw Jessica sitting up on her bed, looking scared. Surprise registered in her face.

"Nick. What are you doing here? You scared me half way to death!" she whispered, her heart pounding at how incredible Nick looked in a pair of sweats, and a baggy t-shirt.

"I wanted to see you. I haven't been able to talk to you, and this is the only way I could think of that would work," Nick whispered, slowly walking towards Jessica's bed.

Jessica stiffened. "Nick, I don't want your mother to find us here together. She would fire me and my family for sure!" she said. Nick reached her bedside, and sat down. He grabbed one of her hands.

"Jess, I know you feel the same way I do about you. And I want us to be together-"

"But don't you see, Nick? We can't be together! I'm nowhere near your social status! I'm nothing next to you. I don't deserve you," she cried, tears forming in her eyes.

"Shh...don't say that, Jess, it's not true. I don't care about social status. I only care about you. I want to be with you. Please let me be with you..." he murmured, leaning in and pressing his lips against hers. She slowly opened her lips, and allowed his tongue to enter her mouth. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and brought him closer to her.

Nick slowly pushed her back on the bed, on top of her. His hands running up and down her sides. Their breathing started get heavy, and their kisses more long and deep.

Suddenly, Jessica broke off. "Nick! We can't do this! We can't! I don't wanna get caught," she said softly, burying her face in his neck. God, he smelled so good.

Nick sighed. "Yeah, I know, you're right. I guess I better go. Hey, tomorrow's your day off, right?" Nick said excitedly.

"Um, yeah, why?" she asked, perplexed.

"Why don't you spend it with me?" Nick said, running his hands over her face.

"Nick, we can't do that. What if someone sees us?" Jessica said, even though she desperately wanted that to happen.

"No, we can go out on my boat! No one will be able to see us there," Nick responded. Jessica thought about it for a moment.

"Okay, Nick. But what are you gonna tell your mother?" she questioned.

"Oh, I'll just tell her that I'm going out with Brian, and I'll tell Brian, so he can make himself scarce tomorrow. Then, I can meet you at the park down the street, near the fountain where there's rarely anybody, okay?" Nick said, his heart thudding.

"Okay, Nick."

Nick pulled her in for a quick kiss. "I better go now. I'll see you tomorrow." With that, he stood up, and exited the room, quietly walking back to his room.

Jessica sighed, and lay back on her bed, smiling. "I wish we didn't have to sneak around," she said to herself, but content that she would be with Nick. With that thought, she drifted off into a deep slumber.

Nick reached the top steps just when his mom came out of her room.

"Oh shit!" he said to himself. "What am I gonna say?"

His mother was startled when she saw Nick near the steps. "Nick. What are you doing?" Mrs. Carter asked.

"Oh, um, I woke up thirsty, and went to get a drink of water in the kitchen," Nick lied, hoping his mother wouldn't see right through him. He was lucky that she couldn't see his face clearly because of the dark or he was sure she would know he was lying to him.

"Oh, okay, Nick. You better head back to bed, it's late. I was going to get a drink of water myself."

Nick nodded, relieved that his mother had believed him. He really hated lying to his mother, but it was the only way he could see his love. He quickly disappeared into his room, and flopped down on his bed, his heart going back to normal rhythm.

"Sheesh! That was close! If Jess hadn't urged me to leave, I'm sure my mother would have found out, and she would have kicked them out for sure!" He slipped under his covers, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
