Chapter 15

That night, Jenna lay in bed, Nick's arms around her. She almost sighed. She hadn't called Brian yet, but she was planning on it tomorrow morning. Just thinking about him made her heart start to beat faster.

Nick started to carress her cheek.

"Honey, what's the matter? You're not saying much," Nick questioned. He pulled her closer to his chest and kissed her neck. Jenna felt suffocated, and wanted to push him away.

"Oh, nothing, sweetie. I was just thinking about Emmy's birthday party tomorrow. Can you believe our little angel is turning five?" she said, trying to get away from the real subject of the matter.

"Yeah...Do you think surprising her with that little car that you can actually drive is a good idea? I mean, she could get into an accident or something," Nick said.

"Don't worry about it, Nick. Every time she uses it, someone is going to be supervising her. I already decorated the living room after I put her to bed, so the only thing we have left is the cake. We have to pick it up at ten right?" Jenna questioned.

"Yeah. I'll go pick it up, honey, you stay here and get Emily and yourself ready," Nick suggested.

"Okay, Nick. So, um...are you going to call Brian, or do you want me to call him?" Jenna asked, nonchalantly.

"Oh, I think I'll call him, hon, don't worry your pretty little head over him. I have a lot to talk with him about anyway, so I'll call him," Nick said.

"Okay, Nick. Well, it's getting late, and we have to get up early tomorrow so we better be getting to sleep," Jenna said, trying not to sound disappointed.

"You're right. Night, hon," he said, turning out the light, and kissing her on her mouth. Jenna lay her head on his chest and slowly drifted off to sleep, thinking about Brian.

"Hey, Lisa! How are you...Yeah, we're fine, and little Emily here is eating breakfast. Listen, I just wanted to remind you not to forget about Emily's birthday party today...I know, I know, I was just making sure. Okay, I'll see you later then. You too....Bye." Jenna hung up the phone. She had just finished calling all of the guests to remind them of the party. She looked over at Emily who was happy eating her Cheerios. She was only in her underwear because Jenna was afraid her birthday dress would get dirty.

"Honey, hurry up, we need to get you dressed," Jenna said, cleaning up the counter.

"Okay, Mommy." Emily finished eating her cereal, then took her bowl to the sink. Jenna picked her up and carried her out of the kitchen.

"Okay, let's get you ready for this birthday party."

A few hours later, when the party was in full swing, Brian still hadn't appeared. Jenna wondered if Nick had called him in the first place, but she didn't dare ask him, because he could get suspicious. She sighed and walked back to the kitchen. She sat down at the kitchen table, and leaned her head on her arms. She was developing a major headache. Just then, Nick entered the kitchen, and saw Jenna.

"Honey, what's wrong? Are you okay?" Nick asked, concerned. He sat down in front of her. "Jen?"

Jenna slowly lifted her head. "I'm sorry, Nick, I just have a terrible headache," she explained.

"Oh, do you want me to get you some aspirin?" Nick asked.

"Sure, Nick, that would be great, thanks."

Nick stood up and walked out of the kitchen, headed to the bathroom where the aspirin was.

"I don't know what I'm doing here. I mean, I'm glad that Nick and I have reconciled but I don't know if I'll be able to take looking at Jenna." Brian stepped out of his car, and started to head up the stairs. He had been shocked when he had heard Nick's voice over the phone this morning, but it had been him nonetheless. He had agreed to come to the birthday party. He had never seen little Emily before, so he was looking forward to that. The guys told him that she was beautiful, but he had never even seen a picture of her.

He slowly walked into the house, since the front door had been open. He saw the guys in one corner talking. He decided to greet them later. First, he had to get a drink of water. His throat was bone dry of nervousness. He walked into the kitchen, and stopped dead on his tracks.

Jenna turned her head towards the kitchen door, and her jaw almost dropped. It was him.

"Brian!" she exclaimed.
