Chapter 16

"Jenna...hi." Brian cleared his throat. He couldn't move, and could barely breathe. She looked more beautiful than ever. So very beautiful...

"Um, hi, Brian. Uh...how have you been?" Jenna forced out, taking in all of him, savoring the feeling of having him in her life again.

"I've been, uh, fine. Yeah, just fine," Brian choked out.

Just then, Nick entered the kitchen.

"Honey, here's your..." His voice trailed off when he saw Brian. "Brian."

Brian turned towards Nick and smiled.

"Hey, Nick! How's it going?" Brian greeted.

"I'm all right. It's been a long time," Nick said.

"Yeah, it has." They awkwardly hugged each other. Then, Nick looked from Jenna to Brian and back.

"So, um, have you seen the other guys?" Nick asked.

"Uh, no...I'll go greet them now," Brian said. His throat was still as dry as a well in the desert, but he wasn't about to ask for a glass of water. He turned around and exited the kitchen.

Nick walked up to one of the cupboards and took out a glass, filling it up with water. He sat down across from Jenna and handed her the aspirin, handing her the glass of water.

"Sweetie...never mind," Nick said, looking down at his hands. Suddenly, he had felt very insecure and had wanted to ask Jenna about Brian but decided not to. He didn't want to get into an argument with her.

"What, Nick? You can't just leave me hanging," Jenna said, downing the pills and the water.

"No, forget about it, hon, it was nothing important. Hey, do you want to lay down for a while until your headache goes away? I could look after stuff while you're sleeping," Nick suggested.

"No, Nick, that won't be necessary. I'm not about to miss my baby's party because of a silly headache. In fact, we should be getting back. Come on," she said, standing up. She started to walk out of the kitchen, but Nick's hand grabbed her arm. She turned around and looked at him expectantly.

"Jenna?" he said, looking deep into her eyes. She stared right back at him.

"What is it, Nick?" she asked, almost exasperatedly but held herself in check.

"I love you, baby," he whispered. There was a long silence. Jenna just could not bring herself to say those words while she was thinking of Brian. But she had to, or else he would suspect something, and would be very hurt, so to cut the prolonged and almost uncomfortable silence, she threw herself into his arms and buried her face in his chest.

"Oh, Nick. I love you too, sweetie. So much," she whispered. She knew she meant what she said, but why had it suddenly become so hard when Brian was nearby. Could it be possible that the old feelings for Brian were resurfacing? No. It couldn't possibly be.

"Come on, hon, let's head back," Nick whispered, grabbing her hand, and pulling her out of the kitchen. No. She loved Nick and only Nick.
