Chapter 19

"Sweetie, can you hand me the juice?" Nick asked, looking up at his wife while they were eating breakfast. When she didn't respond, he called her again.

"Oh, what? Sorry, what did you say?" Jenna asked, distracted.

"What's wrong, baby? You're not acting yourself," Nick said, concerned.

"Just thinking about what I'm gonna do today," Jenna lied lamely.

"Oh. Okay. Well, I gotta go, babe." Nick stood up. He leaned down and planted a soft kiss on Jenna's lips. "I love you."

"I love you, too," Jenna whispered, turning her head. She couldn't bear to look at him after what she had done.

"I'll see you later." Nick grabbed his keys and walked out of the house. She heard him turn on the jeep and drive out of the driveway. She went upstairs and checked in on Emily. She was still sleeping. Then she decided to call Brian. She knew that he had Mondays off. Before she knew it, she had dialed Brian's phone number, and was waiting with her heart pounding for him to pick it up.

"Hello?" Brian's sweet angelic voice answered. Her heart fluttered.

"Hey," she greeted softly.

"Oh, hi, Jen! What's up?" He sounded really happy to hear from her.

"Nothing much, I was just bored. I have nothing to do," Jenna responded.

"Really? Do you want me to come over?" Brian questioned.

"Well...Emily's here," she said.

"That doesn't matter. We'll watch movies together and talk so you won't be bored. We don't have to do anything," Brian said. Jenna's heart melted. He was so considerate and understanding.

"Okay, Brian. Come over," Jenna said.

"Great. I'll be over in a little while." They hung up the phone, and Jenna went to prepare lemonade.

A while later, the doorbell rang. Jenna quickly walked up to the front door, and swung it open. She smiled.

"Hey, Brian."

"Hey, Jenna." He leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, in case the neighbors were watching.

"Come in," she said, moving back to allow him space to come in. He entered the house, and he followed her into the living room. They sat down on the sofa, and Jenna turned on the television.

Suddenly, Brian leaned in and kissed Jenna hard on the lips, catching her by surprise, but kissing him back.

"Wow...what was that for?" Jenna asked, breathlessly.

"I couldn't help it, Jenna. You're so beautiful," Brian whispered. She noticed how close they were to each other, and she couldn' t help but lean in to kiss him again, inhaling his fresh clean scent, and cologne. She wrapped her arms around Brian's neck and pulled him closer. She faintly heard footsteps upstairs. She reluctantly pulled away and brushed her lipstick from his mouth.

"I better go check on Emily," Jenna said, standing up. Just then, Emily peered down from the railing of the second floor.

"Mommy?" the little girl said shyly.

"Come here, sweetie. You remember Brian from you party, right? He just came over to visit," Jenna said. Emily slowly walked down the steps in her Tweety nightgown and bunny slippers, clutching her white teddy bear. When she got to the first floor, she ran into her mother's arms, and hid her head from Brian.

"Aww come on, sweetheart, aren't you going to greet Brian?" Jenna said, smiling. Emily turned and looked at Brian, who was smiling sweetly at her. She smiled.

"Hi, Brian," she said, then squealed, burying her head in her mother's chest.

"Hey, pumpkin," Brian said.

"Brian, I'm gonna go give her breakfast, you wanna join us in the kitchen?" Jenna asked.

"Sure," Brian said. They walked into the kitchen, and Jenna set Emily down on one of the chairs, then went to get her cereal.

A few minutes later, they were all seated around the kitchen table, Emily eating her cereal, and Brian and Jenna sipping a glass of juice. They were talking easily when they heard the front door open.

"Jenna?" Nick's voice floated into the kitchen. Jenna and Brian froze.

"Oh, shit! It's Nick!" Jenna whispered.
