Chapter 1

Carolyn ran a brush through her hair quickly, her light brown hair highlighted by the Florida sun. Nick would be there any minute. It was almost six. She grabbed her bag, and ran down the stairs in time to hear the doorbell ring. She slowed down to catch her breath. She didn't want Nick thinking that she was rushing to be with him, although she was. She swung open the door, and smiled.

"Hey, Nick," she greeted, walking into his arms. Nick rubbed her back, and planted a kiss on her neck.

"Hey, baby. Ready to go?" he asked.

"Yeah. Let me just tell my mom I'm leaving." She turned around, and shouted that she was leaving, and she heard her mother faintly saying good-bye.

She closed the front door behind her, and walked down the steps towards Nick's car. He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips.

"You're so beautiful, you know that?" he asked me as he opened the door for her to go in his car. She smiled.

"Oh, Nick, stop it. Where are we going anyway?" she asked when Nick was seated beside her.

"You'll see," he said, pulling out of the parking space.

A while later, they were seated across from each other at a tiny French restaurant on the beach front.

"I've never noticed this place. It's beautiful," Carolyn noted. Nick nodded.

"Yeah, it is. That's why I brought you here," he replied.

"I thought you brought me here to tell me something really important," Carolyn said, looking down at her menu. Nick cleared his throat, suddenly nervous.

"Oh, yeah. Right," he croaked out. Carolyn looked up at Nick. He sounded strange.

"What's up, Nick?" she asked, with a frown.

"I don't want to ruin our night. I mean, not ruin, but, well-"

"What are you trying to say?" Carolyn demanded. Her heart started beating faster. Was he going to break up with her? They'd only been going out for three months. He had gotten back from tour about six months before, and had since then been recording their new album.

"Let's talk about this later. It's nothing bad, I promise," Nick whispered. But he knew it would probably be something bad for her. Carolyn released a breath.

"Okay, Nick, if you say so," she said, still a little uncertain.

After their dinner, Nick took Carolyn back to her house. Before she got out of the car, Carolyn asked him again.

"Come on, Nick! I want to know what you need to tell me that's sooo important!" she insisted, crossing her arms and looking straight ahead. Nick leaned over, and put one of his arms around her. He gently kissed her lips, then pulled back.

"Don't worry about it, baby. I'll talk to you about it later on this week, okay? I promise. It's gonna take a while, so I think we should do it some other time," Nick said, rubbing her neck with one of his hands.

Yeah, right, coward. Just go right out and tell her, Nick thought.

"Fine," Carolyn said, and opened the car door. Nick grabbed one of her arms.

"Hey...you're not mad, are you?" he asked. The last thing he wanted to do was get her mad at him. Carolyn sighed.

"No, Nick, I'm not mad. Goodnight," she said, and pulled away.

"Carrie, wait," Nick said.

"What?" she said, turning around.

"I love you, baby."

"I love you, too," she said, after a pause. She slammed the door behind her, and ran up the steps, and into her house.

Nick sighed. He knew she was mad at him even if she denied it. He turned on the car, and drove home.
