Chapter 5

Carrie slowly opened her eyes. She knew there wasn't something right about that day. Then it came back to her. Nick was leaving her for three months.

"Oh, God," she groaned, as she rolled out of bed and padded to the bathroom. She brushed her teeth, then took a hot bath. The rain was pounding hard against the bathroom sunroof. Carrie looked up at it, and just started crying.

"How can he leave me now?" she cried.

A little while later, when she was in her room getting dressed, the phone rang. She ran downstairs and picked it up.

"Hello?" she answered breathlessly.

"Hey, babe," Nick greeted warmly. "How are you feeling?"

"Oh, I'm doing all right," Carrie lied, tears threatening to well over.

"Are you sure?" Nick could hear the sadness in her voice, even though she was covering it up pretty well.

"Yes, Nick, I'm doing just fine."

"Well...I just called to say goodbye. We're leaving pretty soon," Nick whispered.

"Okay," Carrie said, trying to sound indifferent. She didn't want him to know how much she was hurting right at that moment.

"Okay, Carrie. I'll call you tonight, okay?" he said.

"Sure," she replied easily.

"Okay..." He sounded reluctant to let her go. "I'm gonna miss you a lot, Carrie."

"I'll miss you too, Nick. Well, have a nice trip," she replied.

"Thanks, hon. I'll talk to you later."

"Bye." As soon as she hung up, she ran back upstairs and flung herself on the bed, racking sobs shaking her body.

"Hey, are you okay?" Her brother appeared at the doorway, looking somewhat concerned.

"Yeah, I'm okay. Just close the door behind you, all right?" She turned her head and stared out the window. She felt so alone. Today was going to be a very long day. She decided that calling up one of her friends would cheer her up. She called Dan, a friend she'd had since middle school. They used to be very close friends, but drifted apart once Carrie started to date. None of her boyfriends had liked her having guy friends.

She dialed Dan's number. It rang three times before someone picked up.

"Hello?" a deep guy voice answered. She smiled.

"Guess who?" she replied.

"Carrie?" he sounded surprised, but happy.

"Right! So...how have you been, Danny?" she inquired, twirling the telephone line round and round.

"I've been all right," he said. "What about you? It's been a while since we've talked."

"I'm hanging in there, Dan," she said quietly.

"Why, what's wrong?" he asked, concerned.

"Well...my boyfriend just left me for three months," she replied, unhappily.

"What a jerk," Dan sympathized.

"No, he's not a jerk...At least not really," she said, smiling.

"Well then, if he wasn't, he'd never leave such a beautiful and sweet girl for such a long time," he replied.

"Oh, Dan, knock it off!" Carrie laughed, thinking he was just joking.

"Listen, do you wanna hang out sometime soon? It'd do you some good to get out and distract yourself so you won't think about him," he offered, hoping she'd agree.

"Well, sure, Dan, that's a good idea. Although you're gonna have to work pretty hard to make me not think about him," she warned.

"It's okay, I just wanna help you feel better," he said softly.

"Thanks, Dan. You're a great friend, you know that? I'm sorry we haven't been as close as we used to be," she said, regretfully.

"It's okay, Car, I know how jealous boyfriends can be, and believe me, I'm not one to get into fights."

"Yeah, I know. So, do you have a girlfriend?" she asked.

"Nope. I don't. So, when do you wanna get together? How about this Saturday night? We can go watch a movie, and walk downtown. I heard there's a festival going on down there this weekend. It's supposed to be really good," he stated.

"Oh, that's great. Sure, that'd be awesome. Do you still remember where I live?" she joked.

"It hasn't been that long, Carrie," he laughed.

"Okay, well, pick me up at around seven, okay?"

"That's great. See you then."

"Okay, bubbye." Carrie hung up the phone, and she had to admit, she felt a lot better. She didn't feel as lonely or depressed as she had just a little while before. She wished her best friend, Anna, were home, but Anna was on vacation with her rich boyfriend. Carrie sometimes envied her a little. She got to spend so much time with her boyfriend.

"Honey, do you want to go with me grocery shopping?" Carrie heard her mom's muffled voice through the door.

"Sure, Mom!" She really wanted to get out of the house. Even though it was raining, she didn't mind getting a little wet. She sighed deeply, thinking about Nick, but then pushed him out of her mind.
