Chapter 3

The next day, while they guys were performing sound check for their concert in Orlando, Nick slipped backstage. He looked around for Kimberly for a few minutes before he found her. She was staring down at a clipboard on her lap, her black silky hair blanketing her face. Nick took a deep breath and walked up to her.

"Hey," he greeted. Kimberly looked up briefly and gave him a quick smile.

"Hi," she responded, going back to her clipboard.

"Um...what's up?" What was wrong with him? He hadn't felt nervous about talking to a girl in a very long time. Why was he starting now?

"Nothing much. Trying to decide something. Aren't you supposed to be doing sound check right now?" she asked. She clearly didn't want to be talking to him at the minute. For some reason, a pang of hurt pounded his heart. Something must be seriously wrong with him. He actually cared what this girl said.

"Uh...yeah," he mumbled.

"Well...I think you should go back, and stop wasting your time hanging around here, okay?" With that, she stood up and walked away. Nick stared after her, dumbfoundedly. He couldn't remember the last time a girl dissed him like that. A surge of anger coursed through him.

"Well, I don't care. It's her loss," he mumbled to himself as he walked back towards the stage. But he knew deep in his heart that was a lie. This beautiful intense girl had gotten under his skin in less than a day. Her beauty was so...deep. He knew that made no sense, but that was the only way he could describe how beautiful Kimberly was, and he was determined to sleep with her whether she liked it or not. She couldn't resist the Carter charms for long. And after he had his way with her, he would discard her, just like he had all of the other girls he had been with in the last six months. Satisfied, he walked onto the stage.

A few days later, Nick went up to Kimberly again. This time, he was determined on asking her out. They had a few days off before the next show, and they had checked in a hotel on the waterfront. He spotted her sunbathing on the beach. He casually walked up to her.

"Hi, Kimberly," he said.

"Hi, Nick. Is there a reason why you keep coming up to me?" she asked straightfowardly. That caught Nick off guard. He didn't know she would be that blatant. He blushed.

"Uh...yeah. Actually, I was wondering if you would like to go out with me," Nick said, the worlds tumbling out of his mouth in a rush. The question caught Kim's attention. She took of her sunglasses and stared into Nick's face. She had heard how Nick had been for the past few months. And she wasn't planning on being one of his rent-a-chicks for a day. Her aunt had tactfully warned her a few days ago when she had seen Nick talking to Kim.

"Nope. Sorry, Nick, I'm not gonna go out with you. Not now, not ever," Kimberly stated, putting on her sunglasses again.

"What?" The word flew out of Nick's mouth before he could catch himself.

"Apparently you are used to girls falling at your feet, craving your attention. But, you see, Nick, I'm not one of those girls. So, if you would leave me alone, I would really appreciate it," she said. Nick swallowed noticeably.

"Why don't you wanna go out with me?" he asked.

"Because..." She tried to think of an excuse that he would believe. The truth was that she was attracted to him, but after finding out how he is, she tried to squash her attraction. So far, she was being unsuccessful. "Because I just don't, okay? Now leave me alone, and don't ask me any more questions," she said.

Nick had his pride. Without a word, he turned around and walked away.
