Chapter 1

Lorelei Mitchell idly tapped her pen on her desk. Psychology 101 wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It was harder than she had expected.

"So, what would you tell a psychology patient who says that they're going to try and hurt themselves the minute they leave that office?" Professor Grant asked. He was also a psychologist. His gaze settled upon Lorelei.

"Ms. Mitchell? Will you enlighten us?" Mr. Grant asked when he noted that she didn't look as if she were paying attention. Lorelei looked up.

"You would tell them that they would be admitted into a hospital until further notice. The patient would be treated somewhere where he or she wouldn't be able to hurt himself or herself," Lorelei responded. She knew he had asked her because she didn't seem to be paying attention, but even though she had been thinking of something else, she had still listened to what he had been saying.

"Very good, Ms. Mitchell," Mr. Grant said, turning back to the rest of the class. He continued his lecture, and Lorelei stifled a yawn. Why was it that she got the most boring teachers for every single class she had?

Forty-five minutes later, she exited the classroom. That had been her last class of the day, so she headed towards her dorm room.

When she had been deciding on what college she had wanted to attend, she had wanted to get as far away from home as possible. It wasn't that she hated her family, but they were really irritating. She had moved all the way from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Orlando, Florida to attend University of Orlando. She had felt so relieved.

She quickly crossed campus, and entered Carnigey Hall, the coed dorm. She climbed the stairs to the second floor, and walked quickly towards her room, taking out her key from her purse. She slid it into the lock, then opened her door. She stepped into her room, pushing the door closed behind her. She noticed that her roommate was there lying on her bed facedown.

"Carol, are you okay?" Lorelei asked, dropping her books on her desk. Carol lifted her head, her brown hair covering her face.

"No, Lori, I'm NOT okay...I have a terrible hangover. Last night was the worst night of my life," she mumbled, dropping her head back onto her pillow. Lorelei laughed.

"That's what you say every time you have a hangover, Carol. Listen, I'm gonna run down to the cafeteria to grab something to eat. Do you want something?" Lorelei asked, digging in her purse for money. When she had made sure that she had money, she grabbed a hairbrush from her dresser and began to brush her long blond hair. Then, she grabbed her eye liner, and applied to, to accentuate her blue eyes.

"No way...I'll throw up. I just need to sleep. Oh, and later on, Mark's gonna stop by, so can you make yourself scarce after 5? You can come back at around 8," Carol said.

One thing that kind of irritated Lorelei was being kicked out of her own room for hours. But she agreed anyway. She definitely did not want to get on Carol's bad side.

"Sure, Carol. I'll see ya later," Lorelei said. She looked at her watch. It was only two o'clock. She exited her room, and closed the door.

When she reached the cafeteria, she had been looking for her lipstick in her purse, when she walked right into someone who had been standing in line. The person looked back. She looked up.

"I'm so sorry! I didn't realize where I was going," Lorelei apologized. She took a good look at the guy she had just bumped into.

Dammmn! This has got to be the hottest guy in this whole campus! I haven't seen him around before...Lorelei thought. She smiled. The stranger smiled also.

"It's okay. I do it all the time. Especially when I'm new around a place," the guy said, his blue eyes deeper than the sea.

"Oh, you're new around here?" Lorelei asked.

"Yeah. I just transferred from...another college. This one's closer to my job," the stranger explained.

"Oh, really? What do you do?" Lorelei inquired curiously.

"Oh, I'm into the music business...nothing important. Now that we're talking, I think we should introduce ourselves. I'm Nick Carter," Nick said, outstretching his hand. Lorelei placed her hand into his, feeling his warmth seep from his hand to hers.

"I'm Lorelei Mitchell. You can call me Lori for short," Lorelei said.

This guy's got the greatest hands, Lorelei noted.

"Hey, that's a very beautiful name," Nick complimented, smiling. Lorelei blushed.

"Thanks...Hey, do you wanna join me for lunch? I hate to eat alone, and since you look like you're about to eat, why don't you keep me company?" she asked. The line started to move, and they moved forward, grabbing trays.

"Sure, that would be great! I haven't met my roommate yet. He wasn't there when I got in," Nick stated, grabbing a roll of bread from the pile.

"That's too bad. Hey, which dorm room are you in? The men's dorm or the coed?" she questioned.

"I'm not sure. They sent me to the only place they had available, and that was Carnigey Hall. They didn't tell me if it was coed or not," Nick said, dropping a lump of mashed potatoes onto his plate.

"Really? That's the coed dorm. I live there, too," Lorelei said, pleased.

"My parents would kill me if they found out I was living in a coed dorm," Nick said, laughing.

"My parents don't either. They would totally mutilate then annihilate me," Lorelei said, putting some fries on her plate. They reached the end of the line. Nick paid for his food, then Lorelei. They walked towards the closest free table, and sat down across from each other.

"So what are you, a sophomore, junior?" Lorelei asked once they had settled in.

"I'm a junior. I'm 20. You?" Nick inquired.

"The same. Hey, what floor do you live on?" Lorelei asked.

"The second floor, you?" Nick said.

"That's cool, I live on the second floor, too. We can hang out sometimes," Lorelei said.

"Yeah, that would be cool."

"Ugh, I just remembered that I can't go back to my dorm room. My roommate Carol told me it's off limits. Her boyfriend is gonna go over," Lorelei explained. Nick nodded with understanding, a small smile on his face.

"Hey, do you wanna come help me put everything in place in my room. I brought my TV, so we can kill some time while your friend...uh...does whatever," Nick finished. They burst out laughing.

"Okay, sounds cool. Hey, who's your roommate? I might know him," Lorelei said.

"John Parker," Nick answered.

"Oh, John! He's a really nice guy. Very sweet. Very smart. Glasses. You know, the quiet type," Lorelei said.

"Ohh. Well, at least he's not some crazy biker who parties all night and sleeps all day," Nick said. Lorelei smiled.

"My roommate is a little like that. She parties all night. Sleeps all day, and misses most of her classes when she has a hangover," Lorelei said.

"That's too bad. So do you wanna get going? We finished eating like five minutes ago," Nick said.

"Sure. Let's go," Lorelei said, standing up and picking up her tray. Nick did the same, and they dumped their trash in the bin, and placed the trays in the dirty stack. They walked out of the cafeteria, and headed towards the dorms.

This year is gonna turn out better than I expected...I hope, Lorelei thought.
