Chapter 2

Lorelei sat on Nick's bed, flipping through the pages of an old magazine that had been laying on the desk, while Nick was putting all of his stuff into place.

"Hey, aren't you gonna help me? Isn't that why you came?" Nick teased. Lorelei looked up, smiling.

"Sorry, Nick. What can I help you with?" she stood up, and placed the magazine back where she found it.

"It's okay, I was only teasing. So, Lorelei...are you from Orlando originally?" Nick asked, his voice muffled, stacking up books and CDs in the bottom of his closet.

"No, I'm from Philadelphia. I wanted to get far away from my family when I went away to college. Anyway, I wanted to go somewhere where it was warm all year round. I'm sick of subzero temperatures, snow, ice, all that stuff. Around this time it's pretty cold right now over there, even though it's only the first week of November. California was too far away, so I decided on Florida. Besides, I've always loved Florida," Lorelei explained.

"Oh, how come you wanted to get far away from your family?" Nick inquired.

"They are...too overprotective and extremely strict. When I told them I was coming to Florida for college, they said that if I did come here, that they'd disown me. They wanted me to go to Philadelphia University where my older brother is and where my older sister graduated from. I mean come on, lighten up. It's my life, ya know?" Lorelei said, grabbing the magazine again.

"Really? Wow, they disowned you because you wanted to come here for college? That's whacked out," Nick sympathized.

"Tell me about it. And when I told them that I was still gonna come here for college they told me that they never wanted to see me again, that I had always been the rebel. Ugh! So I haven't spoken a word to them since I left three years ago," she said.

"How do you pay for college?" Nick asked.

"I have a full scholarship, for my academics and extracurricular activities," Lorelei responded.

"That's cool. So when you graduate from college, are you gonna stay here, living in Orlando?"

"Yeah," she replied. "I want to be a psychologist. Or maybe with my degree in psychology, I could help out kids who need help mentally, maybe social work, or something like that," she responded. "What about you? What are you majoring in?"

"Music," he replied, succintly.

"What do you wanna do when you graduate?" she asked.

"I wanna be a performer."

I'm not lying to her. I mean, I am a performer, not completely yet, but soon we're gonna release our first single as the Backstreet Boys, Nick thought. He didn't know why he didn't tell her the complete truth. He just didn't want her to think of him as weird or laugh in his face.

"That's cool. So, listen, do you wanna go out sometime? I mean, we can hang out, whatever you want. You seem like a really cool and interesting person, and I would like to learn more about you," Lorelei said, boldly. Nick smiled.

"Sure, that would be great. We can go to the movies or something this weekend," he suggested.

"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea," Lorelei agreed, smiling. They were getting somewhere. Just then, someone turned the knob, and opened the door. John Parker entered the room, and froze when he saw two people in his room. One being the ultimate love of his life. He immediately turned red. Then he remembered that his new roommate was due today.

"Hey," he said softly. "You must be my new roommate." John turned to Nick, outstretching his hand. Nick shook his hand.

"Yeap. I'm Nick Carter."

"John Parker." John moved his gaze to Lorelei, smiling shyly. "Hi, Lorelei."

"Hey, John, what's up? How're you doing?" she smiled prettily. John's heart almost sped out of his chest. She was so beautiful. For the longest time, he envisioned the moment where he would have a real conversation with Lorelei Mitchell. He never had the guts to ask her out. He swallowed.

"I'm, uh, fine. You?" he asked, shifting from one foot to the other.

"I'm good, too. I better be going. So, Nick, I'll see you around, okay?" Lorelei said, standing up, and dropping the magazine on the desk again.

"Sure, Lorelei. Thanks for keeping me company," Nick said, smiling.

"No problem." She walked towards the door, where John still stood.

"Bye, John," she said, smiling again. She touched his arm slightly before exiting the room. John closed the door after her.

"Oh, God, she has to be the most beautiful, sweetest, goddess alive," John said, unaware that he had said it aloud. Nick smiled.

"You have the hots for her, don't you?" Nick said.

"Huh?" John blushed.

"You like her."

"Oh...yeah, I do. I more than like her. I think I love her..." John said, throwing himself on his bed.

"We were talking about you earlier, when I told her you were my roommate," Nick said.

"Really? What did she say?" John asked, sitting up.

"She said you were smart and sweet," Nick replied.

"Really? Ohh, God, I love her sooo much! She's so beautiful inside and out," John said.

"Why don't you ask her out, then?" Nick asked.

"I'm planning on it," John responded.

Nick nodded, although he really didn't want John or any other guy for that matter to ask Lorelei out. He didn't know what it was. He'd just met her today. But she really was something. He was positive that she had woven her magic around him. And it was all the worse that his roommate was already in love with her when he already liked her way more than you would normally like a person that you had just met.
