Chapter 16

Crystal took a deep breath when they arrived at their block. She steeled herself, blocking away all fear that entered her body. Tensing up her body made all of her body ache from the bruises, but she couldn't help herself.

"Okay, we're gonna have to wait until it gets really dark. Then we'll do it. Then we'd have less of a chance of being found out." Nick drove right past their houses, and parked in the woods a few miles away. He turned off the ignition. They were pretty well hid. There was trees all around, and since it was getting dark, you wouldn't be able to notice the car unless you looked very close.

"So what do we do until then, Nick?" Crystal asked, looking outside the window.

"We'll just wait around. Here, I'll hold you," Nick offered, extending his arms. Since the car was one of the kinds that had no obstruction between the driver's seat and the passenger seat-it was one long seat-Crystal, was able to slide easily into Nick's arms, her back to his chest. He put his arms around her waist, and laid his head on the windshield.

"I'm not hurting you, am I, sweetie?" Nick asked.

"No," Crystal answered.

"Let's just sleep a while. I'm kinda tired," Nick whispered, closing his eyes. Crystal nodded and closed her eyes as well.

A few hours later, Nick opened his eyes. He realized it was very dark outside. He looked at his watch, and realized that it was almost 2 a.m.

"Crystal...wake up," Nick said, gently rubbing his hands up and down her arms. Crystal stirred, and slowly opened her eyes. She turned around and looked at Nick, and smiled.

"Hey," she said. She slid back to the passenger side of the car.

"Let's get going," Nick said, turning on the car. They headed back to their block. As the got closer, Crystal's heart began to pound as it had before. She was truly scared, but she didn't want to tell Nick. The sooner they got their stuff, they faster they would be on their way.

Nick parked the car at the end of the block.

"Let's leave the car here. Then no one will see us. Come on," Nick said. He got out of the car, and left it unlocked in case they had to make a quick exit. Crystal got out of the car as well, and walked around the car quickly. She grabbed Nick's hand.

"Nick, I'm so scared," she finally admitted.

"Oh, honey, don't be. It's okay. If you want, I'll go in for you, sweetie," Nick said, softly, his eyes searching hers.

"No...I need to do this. Come on, let's go," Crystal said. They started walking quietly through the dark streets. Luckily, there wasn't that many street lights. They reached their houses.

"Crystal, if anything goes wrong, just scream really loud, okay? I'll come as quick as I can, okay?" Nick said. Crystal nodded. Nick leaned down and planted a soft kiss on her lips.

"I love you, Crystal," he whispered. He pulled her into his arms. She buried her face in his soft neck.

"I love you too, Nick," she murmured, closing her eyes for a few seconds before pulling away. She brushed his hair out of his eyes with one hand, and smiled. She couldn't resist planting another kiss on his sweet lips.

"Okay...let's go," Crystal said.

"I'll meet out out here in about twenty minutes?" Nick said.

"Okay," Crystal agreed. She turned away and jogged around her house. She climbed up her trellis quietly. When she reached her window, she realized that it was parted. Thankfully, she raised it enough so that she could fit through. She landed on her carpet with a soft thud. She surveyed the room quickly, making sure no one was in here. When she was satisfied that her room was empty, she went to her closet and took out her suitcase quietly. It was rather big, so she could stuff a lot of stuff in there.

Yeah, and how am I gonna get this through the window without making too much noise, huh? she asked herself while she stuffed underwear and shirts, shorts, and accessories into the suitcase. She went into her bathroom and brought back an armful of toiletries, dumping it in the side compartment of the suitcase. Quickly, she stuffed in all the clothes she would need. She went to her closet and took out four pairs of shoes and threw them in the suitcase. She took her makeup bag and put it in the suitcase as well, making sure her favorite hair brush was in there.

When she thought that she couldn't fit more into the suitcase, she stopped putting stuff in it. She quickly changed clothes, her heart still racing form exhiliration and also fear. Fear of getting caught. She took a deep breath, while she ran one of her hairbrushes through her tangled hair. She dropped the hairbrush, and went to her nightstand table. She took out her diary, a few pens, and a wad of bills she had been saving for college. It was a lot of money. She wasn't sure exactly how much, but she had been saving since she was 8. She stuffed it all in the front compartment of her suitcase. She could barely close it herself, but she managed to.

Now, for the most challenging of all tasks, she thought to herself.
