Chapter 17

Nick finished packing all the stuff he was taking with him in a large duffel bag, and in a medium sized suitcase. He had already gone into his parents' room and taken all of his parents' money. He knew all of their stashes and had found a large amount of money all together.

They're fools for having so much money laying around the house, Nick thought. He looked in on his brother and sisters, saying a silent goodbye. Even in the dark, their dark tans from being on vacation was apparent. But now, he was glad he hadn't gone on the trip. He quietly closed the door, and headed back to his room. He didn't even want to leave a note, so he didn't. He grabbed the duffel bag and the suitcase, then quietly walking down the stairs, out of the house, and out of his family's life.

Crystal quietly opened her parents' bedroom door, cringing when it squeaked. She looked to see if they had stirred but they hadn't. Breathing a sigh of relief, she quietly walked towards her father's bedside table. She opened it, and took out his wallet. She looked inside. There was a wad of hundred dollar bills. She took that, and his MAC card. She quickly replaced his wallet and closed the drawer and did the same with her mother. Thankful that they hadn't woken up, she exited their bedroom, closing the door quietly. She went back to her room and put everything in the last available space in the suitcase. She tried to pick it up after she was finished and almost fell.

"Shit, this is heavy!" she exclaimed. She decided that dragging it wouldn't make that much of a noise. She exited her room, and closed the door behind her. She thought of her camera, and quickly went back to get it and the new pack of film she had bought but hadn't had the chance to use. She put it in her backpack, where she had stuffed some other valuable stuff she had. She took one last look at her bedroom.

Goodbye, goodbye, I'm so glad I'm finally leaving you forever. You've been my refuge...but also a part of the place I hate the most...What am I, going crazy now? Talking to my damned room...all these problems are surely gonna make me crazy, Crystal thought, silently shutting her bedroom door behind her. She put on her backpack, and grabbed her suitcase. It made a little bit of noise but not much. It made a little bit more noise on the stairs, but not enough to wake up her parents. Especially over her father's snoring.

When she reached the front door, she looked behind her one last time.

No looking back, Crystal. This is it...the chance you've been waiting for. Now it's time to move on, she thought. She opened the front door and took a quick look around. She noticed Nick's car pulling silently up to her house, and she closed the door behind her quickly. She grabbed her suitcase and walked as fast as she could to the car. She opened the back door of the car and forcefully threw the suitcase in. She closed the door, and jogged around the front and into the car.

"How was it? Any problems?" Nick asked, after planting a kiss on her mouth.

"No, thankfully. Everything went according to plan. Now, let's get a move on. We don't wanna get caught," Crystal said.

"Okay." Nick put the car in gear and stepped on the gas. Crystal took one last look at her ex-home. She looked again when she saw a figure in her ex-boyfriend's house. It looked like him, too.

"Oh, well. Away with the old, on with the new," she muttered.

"What was that, hon?" Nick asked, glancing over at Crystal.

"Oh, nothing. Just saying goodbye to Ruskin," she answered.

Goodbye, Ruskin. Goodbye forever, Crystal thought gleefully. This was the first time in a long time she had felt true happiness.
